Switching Kohler 12 for Briggs 11hp

Recommended Posts

AHS

I gave my father the 1970 wheel horse 12hp to  my fathers 79 C111. So, what’s the ignition switch? The same as it is from Briggs to Kohler? It’s a huge upgrade as far as I’m concerned, the Briggs is tired, and still running, and it smokes some terribly bad! (I thought it was going to blow up 10 years ago!) so, what are the change from Briggs to Kohler? I’m all ears!

What is the Spec number of the 12hp Kohler. Need to determine what ignition system it has.

If the Kohler had a magneto ignition, it should be the same switch.. charging system prevailing.
If it's battery, you will need a battery ignition switch.
Otherwise, very simple swap. I swapped a Kohler 14 in place of a 18HP B&S twin on a WorkHorse GT1848. A few simple wires and a little tweak to the belt cover.

If the 1970 Kohler engine is original and unmolested it should have the solid state trigger ignition and if the Brigs has a mag ignition system there should be no need for a new switch.  Post pictures of the ignition components of both to be sure.

The Kohler has a solid stater ignition, it has a 12v coil and a solenoid on the tractor. I’m sorry, this should be in electrical, moderators.

It's anyones guess what was done to either motor over the years. Do both motors have an external coil? Pics of both would help.

Pick one from this picture.

Sorry bout that! I added the solenoid because it had solenoid/key switch! Just a regular old Kohler!

The C-111 uses a battery type of ignition switch to control a kill relay to control the B&S magneto ignition.

The Kohler with round coil is battery ignition so the C-111 ignition switch will work. You need to eliminate the kill relay and extend the ignition wire to the coil (+) terminal on the round coil.

This is how the Kohler should be wired to the coil
