Shopping for tires

I need to replace the 22x9-12 rear turf tires on my 312-8, I'd like to replace them with an ag tread pattern but I'm only seeing tire sizes of 23x8.5-12.  I'm looking at these https://www.amazon.com/Carlisle-Tru-Power-Bias-Tire/dp/B00LUUW660/ref=sr_1_10?dchild=1&keywords=22x9.50-12+ag+tires&qid=1622832523&sr=8-10 do you think they would work with the 9 inch rim?  Thanks for any advice.

Go 23x10 or 10.5 -12 Those are easily available.  8.5 looks small on a 312. And the wider the tire the less it eats the grass.

Those 23/8.5 AGs would work best on the width rims you currently have. The 10.5 wide AGs would be to wide and not fit correctly.

These are those same tires in 8.5 I do like the looks of the no bulge side wall.  On this particular tractor anyway. That's a good price BTW.

Don't know which 312 you have but I have some rims of a pre-toro 312 and have 10.5 mudtire on it no problemo.   

But again, see other (more experienced) members answer differently. I have had 8.5, didn't like them. So I guess it is part personal preference. 

A little bit sidewall "bulge", I really don't mind. Rather want a lawn you can't even see I drove over and more traction surface in the woods. But all depends on the application and preferences.

First lets make sure we re discussing the correct "rim width"  Some early 300 series (308 and 310) came with 5" wide wheel.  Later they and most other horses used 7" wide rims.  23 8.50 will work fine on the 7" rims   10.50 will fit but look  bulgy.  Quick way to see what size rims you have look at pics.  First shows difference between 5" and 7"  secon pic shows how to measure and what a 7inch would show..third is a 5"

My 312-8 still had he original tires on it when I got it. They were 22 x 9.50 x 12 Armstrong Tires on 7" rims.

My tractor is a Toro model, actually the model # is 73428 and the serial # is 8900854, not sure when it was made.

Thanks for the explanation, I should have thought of that, makes perfect sense.  Mine are 7", I'm good to go with the 8.50"

Thanks to everyone for the help!  I do have one last question:  There is a sticker on the rear differential case that says "uni-drive", is that something like a limited slip differential?

 4 ply 9.50's work well on 7" rims. The 2 ply 9.50's round up in the center with very little air in them. I took a set of 2ply tires off my 520 right after I got it.

Here is a picture of the 2 ply 23 x 9,50 x 12 when I got the 520.

Here is a picture of the 4 ply 24 x 9.50 x 12 that is on it now

 

No Uni-drive is just the name of the transmission. They are not limited slip, but the do real well as long as you are going straight.

If your rims are 7.5 inches wide, you can use 23x10.50-12 TURF tires. For ag style cleat tires, I would stay at 23x8.50-12. The bars are stiff and force all the "flex" to the sidewall. The pics below represent both sizes on a 7.5 inch rim.

It is a 1998 model

 

srry, forget you were shopping AG's, then you gone have some bulge indeed. I just always buy the widest tire I can fit hahaha

Some other things to think about. There is no suspension on a WH. Multi ply ag tires can ride rough when aired up. (that is on hard ground). If you are planning a lot of seat time cutting / mowing might want to think this over.

I have the Deestone 10.5's on my 312 with the original rims. Zero issues or bulges.

 

I bought a pair of Tru Powers in the same size to put on my 160 before I realized how big they were. I'm going to attempt to put them on tomorrow, so I'll update then.

 

 

I am planning on using tubes. Not sure if that will make a difference.

The 520s had the 8.5 inch rims. I’m not sure if any other Tractors did or not. I pick up 520 wheels any chance I get because I like the wider tire on them. Although, I do have some 10.5 inch Deestones on 7 inch wide wheels and they look perfectly fine because the Deestones run very small.

I am wanting to go wider as well. prefer a fat AG, but heard ATV-style tires will mount fine on a 7" wheel up to 12" wide. I am afraid making my rims wider is going to be hard. Since I don't have a spare set laying around. to make from two 7", one 10"

The thing is... wider tires on a OEM rim will work... the tires will just look squishy... which in some cases is a really good look. The tires will be a pain in the behind to put on... but if you have a 7 inch wide rim... you can go with a wider tire... and it will work great.

 

It will give you a fat tire look.

AG are very stiff and with a 7" rim you can not go wider then 10".

ATV tires are made for 7" rims. That is what every ATV has. with those you can go up to 12.5" wide.

 

I personally like that fat tire look. But that is my personal preference.

I have Deestone 12 X 10.5 - 12 on a tractor. I also have Carlisle 12 X 10.5 - 12 Super Lug on a tractor.These are on the same size rim.

There is about 1/2" difference in height, but a big difference in width. Notice in the second pic, you can see the rim sticking up above the tire.

I thought about doing the same with width. What I ran into though is an issue with my plow blade subframe. So... right now... there isn't much clearance between my 18x8.5-8 tires and the plow blade frame. So, I would have to use wheel spacers if I went wider on tires. I don't know if anyone else would have a similar issue as I have, but I just thought I would put that out there, just in case!

 

I also like the bulging over the rim look!
