Handy Don 12,589 #1 Posted May 30, 2021 (edited) @gwest_ca Starting this topic so I can post images for you to confirm the model spec. This is the engine plate on the Tecumseh on my recently-acquired Lawn Ranger and the left and right side views. The only thing off a bit is the muffler, not being a pepper shaker or tube sticking out the right side. The engine fits perfectly on the tractor, including the mounting plate, gas tank and drive belt attachment points, and visually looks like those pictured here on the forum as restored originals. It has electric start and the wiring seems un-hacked and matches the manual's wiring diagram. The Serial No. is, to my eye, 116LR but I'm no expert! The partial rattle can paint job was less than expert , but may be reversible. Let me know what you think! Edited May 30, 2021 by Handy Don
pfrederi 17,959 #2 Posted May 30, 2021 Don't think it is original to the Ranger. Lawn Rangers used H60 the model number is in the HH60 range. Is the block Cast Iron???

Aha! I am the road visiting family so cannot do the magnet test for a couple of days. It does, of course, make perfect sense that for a 53-year-old machine the very basic original aluminum H60 is long gone and been replaced by a cast iron HH60. Does anyone have a way to learn the vintage of the replacement or if it was a WH-spec engine from another model? HH60 - 105065D -- It seems like HH's were used on some similar vintage units. Looking at some other postings here and in other forums, it seems that the HH was for heavier duty than the H. On Partstree, for this spec, there is a bearing at the output side of the crank and a bushing at the flywheel sided (vs. bushings on both sides for an H) as well as the iron vs aluminum with sleeve block. I was surprised how easily it started (3rd pull) and it seems to run smoothly and without smoke (had adequate oil that looks ok but that'll get changed anyway) for the few minutes I let it run. Also will be wanting to get the exhaust re-routed out from under the hood, somehow.
pfrederi 17,959 #4 Posted June 1, 2021 I have not found a listing for Tecumseh that shows for what company a spec number was produced (you can for Kohlers). The HH60's used on some 606/607 and Commando 6 were not your spec number...
305 380 #5 Posted June 1, 2021 (edited) i think it's close enough...you have the correct mounting plate , gas tank, starter , 1" crankshaft and a charging system. just put on the correct exhaust and you are good keep in mind that the model and serial number are on the blower housing which is easily switched out....so no one can be sure of what it really is Edited June 1, 2021 by 305

I'm pretty pleased overall. Except for the exhaust, it has same outward appearance as an H60! My nearest guess is the engine was a replacement in the late 70's or early 80's--maybe even by a dealer--still vintage enough for me. I've seen the specs that pretty accurately describe this unit in a '77 Lausen division engines publication and that doc also mentioned that stock HH60's were delivered white which could explain the white-under-red near the drive pulley. All the major parts places have at least some parts for it so at minimum it'll get a carb kit, air filter cartridge, fuel line, tank clean, and fuel filter plus the usual oil and lube regime and general cleanup (no need to remind me @peter lena!). If I decide to use the electric start I may replace the extremely rusty ignition switch (this is one of the high voltage ones) but since it starts readily with the recoil I may just leave the battery out. Interesting suggestion on the "musical shrouds". When cleaning, I'll be keeping an eye out for a short block tag, too.
305 380 #7 Posted June 1, 2021 i have a NOS H60 shortblock and a NOS HH60 shortblock and they are both white. i believe your engine is a HH60 since i can see a ball bearing retainer screw if you do use the electric start do yourself a favor and add a solenoid . don't depend on the ignition switch to carry the heavy load
