Deck blade holder

Just wondering what you guys use to hold blades while removing them I've been using c clamp on deck as a stop with impact.

I just take  my nuts off with my impact gun. I’ve never had to hold the blades with anything.

I use a block of wood, a socket that has been ground to a sharp edge for full engagement, a breaker bar and a BFH.

Ed, you take off the 'taper' on the edge of the socket?  Good idea!  Gonna do that myself!

Yep, then stand on the socket to keep it fully engaged while I impact the end of the breaker bar with the BFH.

These blade nuts are thin from new and most are worn so bad there is not much hex remaining.  You need all the bite you can get.

@Ed Kennell You need an Impact Gun,easier to hold than a BFH and breaker bar.  Whole lot easier on arm muscles.

I don't take the deck off unless I have to. I jack up the front with a floor jack a used an air impact with a 6 point socket.

I use a 1 1/8" open end wrench on the shaft hex above the blade as a stop.  You can buy one made for this or grind a standard wrench thin enough to fit which is what I did.

If you have an old lawnmower blade you can also make a wrench out of that by grinding out a notch for the top blade nut.  I think it was @pfrederi that posted a pic of the one he made that way.

I have for 30 years been able remove the blades by holding the end of the blade with one hand and the other hand holding a large 1/2” rachet fitted with a 1 1/8” socket on the blade nut. This is on my 37” SD deck, only has two blades, no center blade to remove.

Did maintenance for retirement community for a number of years before retiring had x Mark's and used skidsteer to lift front off the ground and change them.think they would have had a hole in them or some kinda stop to make it easyier.but always wanted my own skid they are so versatile on working on diffrent things.and plowing driveways.I always.used to use breaker with pipe on it till I bought the impact makes it alot easyier.
