520 no spark when hot

Recommended Posts

So was was mowing the other day and my 520 just shut off, tried to get it to restart but no luck. No spark. Waited about a hour and she fired back up for awhile again. I think the ignition module may be crapping out when it gets hot, not all that familiar with these engines and them suckes are kinda pricey to just throw one on. Anyone have some advice I would appreciate it!

Before shelling out the money for a new module, try unscrewing your gas cap. A clogged vent can stop an engine, and then it will restart later.

True. And it is an investment in time to get in there behind the flywheel.

As a less than perfect test, carry a spare spark plug with you and stick it on a spark plug wire immediately after it stops.  Hold the spark plug hex against the engine and watch for spark as you crank the engine.  No spark probably is the module, especially if it comes back after cool down.

An easier "OSI" (obvious um "stuff" inspection) would be to check the ignition coil. They can open up at high temps too. Much easier to get to than pulling the flywheel to start. If you don't have a spare you could make temp wire jumpers and set it a couple feet away from the engine (as far as the plug wires will allow), crank and let it run to normal temps, and see if you still have a spark problem.
