elcamino/wheelhorse 9,326 #51 Posted May 27, 2021 Kev and the clown from WI ( where that is ) remember I have a 1984 El Camino SS which SWMBO refers to the POS. Once she offered the local shop $200.00 to set it on fire, she would furnish lighter fluid and a boxes of matches. They refused , they make too much money off of the POS>
Pullstart 62,912 #52 Posted May 27, 2021 Anyone see anything odd about these old plugs? I can’t tell if they are just right or a little lean...

Light tan/ grey means it’s normal. I put E3 plugs in my gmc and had a gain in fuel mileage.
Pullstart 62,912 #54 Posted May 27, 2021 @elcamino/wheelhorse maybe you(‘re wife) are right! I did a tuneup and thermostat... then there’s a rattle underneath. It doesn’t sound like a knock at least. I drove it up some ramps and crawled around to find the bell housing SUPER loose from the engine! I’ll pull it in the shop and lift it in the air to give the whole thing a once over underneath and nut and bolt that tranny!

I picked up a pair of tires and wheels last night for $150. These are 225/70R19.5 and the spares are 8-19.5. There’s a CL listing for a set of 4 more 8-19.5’s that are in pristine shape that are tickling my fancy. I might grab ‘em while I can, but these rears are in good shape, just not the best tread depth if that makes any sense.
Pullstart 62,912 #59 Posted May 28, 2021 Here is the serious matter on the to-do list. I have the exhaust y-pipe and transmission crossmember out and can see the gap between the block and bell housing!
Pullstart 62,912 #60 Posted May 28, 2021 And my suspicion is confirmed. Broken flex plate. When this happened on my old plow truck, the center hub fell out of the flex plate when I pulled it apart. This could have been detrimental on some mountain pass in PeeAaah in less than a month! 1
Pullstart 62,912 #62 Posted June 1, 2021 The loose transmission problem just got a bit worse... the transmission bellhousing is cracked pretty bad. I have TIG welded an ear back on before, but not half the holes!

Pullstart 62,912 #65 Posted June 1, 2021 Good news! Only three loose pieces!
squonk 41,155 #67 Posted June 1, 2021 Whenever those 3500HD's came into the shop it was always $$$$$ Pads, Rotors, rear axle seals, busted transfer cases. (1 got towed in the the transfer case chain dragging on the ground!)
Pullstart 62,912 #68 Posted June 2, 2021 I grabbed the bellhousing off an SM465 I have laying next to the shop. I’ll dowel that in place and bolt all the pieces together, hoping that they weld back together true. I’ll be sure to make the side (intact) bolt holes the first to be snuggled up and the last to be removed, if this transmission ever needs to be pulled again. The parts store will have extra long dowels in tomorrow morning for me.
