DavidB 2 #1 Posted May 20, 2021 I have an older Wheelhorse with the ONAN 14HP engine. Engine is pretty sound (as far as I know) but I need a new coil. The original coil (166-0832) seems to be made of gold (prices upwards of $200 - IF you can find one.) Is anyone aware of an aftermarket coil that can be used as a replacement? If I can't find a decent priced unit I'll probably be looking to swap out the engine for a Briggs or equivalent, but want to check options first.

onanparts.com 181 #4 Posted May 21, 2021 166-0832 discontinued by Onan. Before ordering one from anyplace, verify they actually have one on the shelf. Most online stores it's a game of, you order it, then they order it... virtual inventory, and everybody waits...and waits...and then they say, oh, yah, can't get it.....:( Sadly this is true for most online sellers....Except us! You can't buy anything from us unless it's actually in stock. We have our own warehouse, not a virtual one. Sorry, no 166-0832 coils left in our real inventory.. 2
redcam 1 #5 Posted May 29, 2021 David, I have a coil for an e140v that I just bought last fall, paid $180 for it & fixed my problem only to have a rod let go in the engine a week ago so if you’re still looking for one I would sell it for $75. figure on parting out the 244h that has a real nice shape 42” mower deck also. just trying to recoup some of the $ I have put into it this past year.
DavidB 2 #6 Posted June 2, 2021 (edited) So, got an old coil off either a Briggs or Tecumseh engine (My friend wasn't sure what machine it was off originally). I had to grind out the mounting holes to match the posts, but once that was done, I bolted it on and presto - a running engine. Now on to the next problem(s). Thanks for the offer, but it looks like my coil problem is solved. (See other post.)

Hello I created an account just to ask redcam if he still has the coil. Is the part number 166-0832. I mow for someone who has a cub cadet lawn tractor that just had a coil go out and we cant find them anywhere and she cant buy a new mower so it has to be fixed or she will have to hire someone else to mow. If you dont have it still would you know of someone who does?
WHX?? 49,919 #10 Posted August 17, 2021 Squirt I believe I have one.

I do not have the tractor because it's at the shop now but I'll get the numbers off of the coil and see if they match. Do you know what type of mower this came off of. Thank you so much!! I'm curious as to how you made that work. IIRC Onan doesn't have the for lack of better word, center pick up to fire the coil.. Guess I'm overthinking this
