redone 45 #1 Posted May 20, 2021 Guys. I am a little rusty at this timing of balance gears. I do have this special tool that sites on the edge of the block and holds the gears in place, but. do i set the at the timing markes on crank shaft and continue installing crank into the block? My block that i am rebuilding already had those gears in the block before machining and doing the valve work. i do not want to ruin this motor. getting the balance gears out of wack Thanks for your help Bill
Shynon 7,459 #2 Posted May 21, 2021 I personally would remove the balance gears, I do it on every motor I rebuild. They are just a hole in the block waiting to happen. 1
kpinnc 12,126 #3 Posted May 21, 2021 I remember years ago, balance gears being referred to as "grenade gears"... Not to mention, unless your tractor has a suspension (shaker) mount you won't know the difference without them. Especially true for a K241. They are smooth amd quiet even without them.

From Brian Miller's site: " Only thirteen K241 engines came from Kohler with balance gears installed. These engines have the specification numbers: 46578, 46634; (Allis Chalmers); 46590 (Yazoo); 46593, 46608, 46633 (John Deere); 46664, 46718, 46764, 46803 (Simplicity); 46809, 46810 (Grainger); and 46838 (Ingersoll Rand). oliver2-44 9,764 #8 Posted May 21, 2021 Another vote to take them out. I have a K341 block destroyed by balance gears needle bearings failing
