I am just wondering why the B chose this narrow hoe handle to chew a hole!

Same reason that I had to replace all the trim boards on my small from porch. Because it was there. Those suckers did a number on the boards luckily they didn't start on any of the 2 x lumber..

Carpenter bees are interesting creatures. I wish sometimes they came in different sizes since they drill a real nice hole. They are fond of pine specially if it is not finished or treated in some way. They usually stay away from hardwoods. Giving the pine an application of a mixture of linseed oil and turpentine ( heavy on the turpentine) keeps them away from it most of the times. They may just start nibbling on it until they detect the turpentine.

They drill in about 1/2" and then make a perfect 90 degree turn for about 1-1/2". If board is only 3/4" many times they go through. If you have them in an outside shed clad with thin boards, place an insecticide "bomb" inside. Stuff will penetrate through the thin wood left and it will kill them all. You will find them all over the floor inside and outside along with some other insects you may have not known about.

I've used a variety of stuff to get rid of them, eventually tearing out the fascia boards and replacing with pressure treated and cladding with aluminum.

 

1. Suck em up with my shop vac and a long wand.  Wave the wand around and they'll get curious to investigate.  Fly too close and WHOOOSH! they're gone.

 

2. Tennis Racket.  My neighbors already think I'm crazy, why not add fuel to the fire?  Must look a hoot when I'm out there swatting at stuff they can't see.

 

3. Brake or Carb cleaner into the holes.  NOT recommended! Too flammable!

 

4. Wait for them to go in the hole and plug it with plastic wood.  The fumes from the PW will kill them.

I remember long ago sitting outside my cousin's dairy barn watching carpenter bees coming and going. We went to the shop, got the can of WD-40 that had a trigger sprayer on it, set it for a stream...... Bees would come out to the edge of the hole, buzz their wings, and take off. While they were there buzzing their wings, we hit them with a bit of WD-40..... Dropped them like a rock.

Oops! I pushed the wrong button. They make traps for this and I'm thinking all I need is a box or two of mason jars and make the traps!

Yes the traps are pretty effective and look pretty cool.

 I make traps for wasps etc from a used unwashed jam jar. Half fill with water. Cheap and efficient.

For carpenter wasps(actually a wasp) or what we around here call a wood borer, or borer bee(looks like a bumble bee) we stuff a paper bag with news paper and hang 'em around the deck. They seem to interpret the bag as a hornet's nest and stay clear of the area.(Reminds me i need to get those put up!)

Couldn't you 3D print a hornet's nest?  

Maybe even some hornets?

Suspend them on dangly wires so it looks like they're buzzing around it.

 

I used to wear a "Hillbilly Toothpick" on a chain around my neck.

It was supposed to prevent alien robots from stealing my luggage.

I actually had an abandoned hornest's nest but gave it away. I don't think ABS plastic replica would deter the borers any. lol I believe its the paper they "see"(sense,smell, whatever). A hornet's nest is essentially paper. I guess I could get my paper mache goin, but the bags work, an ya'll know I'm lazy, I have robots doin all the other work for me!
