squonk 41,155 #26 Posted May 18, 2021 Reading the instructions for this tach, it has a setting for firing every other rev so it will work on a Kohler single. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002033206119.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.0.0.63c939a8YLfHob&algo_pvid=676ca6e9-219e-4861-8335-8f4638758518&algo_expid=676ca6e9-219e-4861-8335-8f4638758518-4&btsid=0bb0623b16213737382306251e1791&ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_,searchweb201603_

Gregor 4,846 #30 Posted May 18, 2021 (edited) Tomorrow I am going to hook this up to one of my tractors, and compare it to a digital hand held. If it's not still raining. Edited May 18, 2021 by Gregor
R Scheer 502 #31 Posted May 18, 2021 The "Tiny Tach" works fine with my Kohler Magnum 12. Shows the corrdct RPM.

ebinmaine 67,624 #36 Posted May 19, 2021 If I had neighbors that were upset when I moved a tractor I'd park a dozen running in the driveway. But I'm a stinker. ✔️. Does not play well with others.
Gregor 4,846 #37 Posted May 19, 2021 Kohler 8 HP with battery ignition The 2 tachs. 1P1r 4 wraps 1P2r 4 wraps Digital hand held Not easy to see 1578 I tried both 4 and 5 wraps around plug wire. didn't seem to make much difference.

Gregor 4,846 #39 Posted May 19, 2021 (edited) And since I have another tach, may as well check that one out. This one is both a contact, and a laser. I think the contact type is the easiest to use. No guessing on the # of wraps. No applying reflective tape, and then trying to hold your laser steady on that tape. Hold the tach on the end of the shaft, your done. After taking all these readings, I adjusted my idle back down to 1300 RPM. Not sure what it should be. Edited May 19, 2021 by Gregor

That said, my c-160 doesn't like to run right below 1250 or 1300 for some reason and that's with two different carburetors on it. So I leave the idle about 1300, 1350. To be honest I don't know that it matters all that much because these air-cooled engines should NEVER be at idle unless they're about to be shut off.
MikMacMike 479 #41 Posted May 19, 2021 17 hours ago, ebinmaine said: It's because for the most part you don't actually need one. Most if not all wheel horses say by the book that with a hydro you should ALWAYS be at 3600 RPM. You need to keep it at full RPM for the best cooling and fluid flow characteristics. For the most part a manual transmission is the same. The only exception I'm aware of is a sickle mower but I'm certainly open to correction from much more experienced people. Disclaimers. Is that how I run my manual transmission tractors? No. Do we pay close attention to make sure they're not overheating? Yes. Do I think tachometers and other gauges look super cool? Yes. The more the better. But I certainly understand the keep it simple theory. Having a hand held is excellent for tune up time, I guess if I was to install a very small one on a tractor is when you add non WH impliments, I just baught a chipper/shredder and I noticed that the suggested rpm was about 2000. Some of them have direct drive, deer drive, reduction by belt pulley sizes, etc. My Mckissick chipper is one that mounts to the front of a tractor. I read somewhere that it wants an RPM around 2,800. Cinnamon horse c-160 is set to a top side of 3,300. Chipper pulley is bigger than the engine pulley so it should be just about right.
Tractorhead 9,064 #43 Posted May 19, 2021 I don’t know if the Kohlers have a auto decompression, that can be the cause of the needed higher idle.

Gregor 4,846 #48 Posted May 20, 2021 The only bad thing about this unit is, you cannot shut it off. There is no switch. I always remove the battery. It does not seem to lose it's data though. It keeps the total hours.
