Slips out of low

I have tried to find an answer on this problem but couldn't find it, it for sure is out there.

My friend @bizon has a 416-8 so a 8 pinion 8 speed. He is having problems with his tranny shooting out of low. 

At one point he got almost killed it, as he was driving his horse with a huge trailer down hill and bang, she poped out of low gear.

He asked me to take a look at it. Since i already took apart 3 trannys. 

Is this the notorious Hi-Low shift fork or does he have damaged gears?

VERY DANGEROUS!!!

These machines should only be pulling 300 to 500 pounds. 

The brakes are just not equipped to stopped heavier loads. 

 

 

As to the transmission gears....

I've never had one pop out of 1st gear. 

3rd, yes. 

Sounds like a worn gear.

I know, and he learned his lesson. he is planning on putting front brakes on his horse.

 

I do get my horse to pull up to 700 pounds, but where I live, everything is as flat as can be and have lot of room for error.

The additional brakes whether front or rear would be extremely interesting to a bunch of us.

Please do share whatever plans or ideas you have for that.

 

It's good that he learned his lesson but much more importantly that it was able to be learned without getting hurt.

 

I do move some pretty stout loads with my c-160. It's important to remember that this tractor is fully restored from front to rear with a nice straight tight properly operating transmission.

Also important to remember that I have specific training in moving heavy loads and I set up that tractor to do just what I needed it to do.

 

 

The high, low shifter fork is a place that's known to wear or break on these.

Can the fork be fixed, or is a replacment necessary? probably depends on the condition.

You'll have to get in there and poke around and see what the actual problem is before that can really be answered. .

If you can shift between hi and low range, it is not the fork.  I would ask if anyone has ever been in this transmission before??  What comes to my mind is the spring and détente ball inside that hi/low shift fork.  That is what keeps the fork in the position you put it.  A weak or broken spring would be an excellent candidate.

   The other place is to look at those gear teeth of the gear that the hi/low fork moves and also the gear that it interfaces with.

   Just for kicks, see how much in and out the input shaft has.  Maybe a shim is in order.
