hello dan , welcome to the site, rotella 30 wt oil is probably the way to go , very well suited to you engine. also when you drain the rear end jack up the front end to increase its discharge , while at that raised point grease the front end 3 fittings , the grease should come out on top of the axel spindle . also grease the steering lower rack at frame level under dash . do you have a new shift boot ? you should . stops moisture entry to trans , capacity , 80-90 , 2 qts+ and measure dip stick , engine 2qts + measure as You go . also take the time to lubricate every movement point , like clutch set up , it should work seamlessly . pete

Welcome to the forum.

Click on the picture in this link.

Lots of info including 2 pages from the Lubrication guide. When it was printed the recommendations in it may have been changed to what was in the original manuals.

I agree with the 30wt in the engine bit the K161only takes 1 1/4 quarts (40 oz). I would start with that and then go by the dipstick. 3 and 4 speed transmissions call for 1 1/2 quarts but you won't hurt it with 2. In my K-series Kohlers I use 30w year round . I use 80w90 in the transmission. In 1964 Wheel Horse issues a service bulletin recommending switching to 40w in the transmission. This was to help prevent the slide rails from messing up causing it to lock up in two gear. Shortly after that they revised the rails to achieve a proper fix. :)

That's a good way to go about it Pete. There's so much conflicting info out there. I found three different numbers for my K-91. Fortunately it had a dipstick. :)

If your your transmission oil comes out looking like a chocolate milkshake, you should flush it with diesel fuel.  These tractors have a rubber boot that allows rain water to get in if they aren’t perfect.

And the Kohler manual says 1 qt. ???????  :dunno:

Of course we are all assuming it has a stock K161S in it.

Treat it like they say to do with the A type oil pan. Put a quart in and check the dipstick. I'm betting that you will need to add another cup. Follow what they say on the previous page depending on the type of dipstick you have. :)

I'm more familiar with the mid 60s to 70s but I'll try to help out.

If the engine is the original Kohler it should use a straight 30 oil of SJ API rating.

Several of the folks here use certain diesel oils with good result.

I use Kinetix brand.

The transmission fluid is just good old inexpensive 80w90 (or close) gear oil.

Thanks again for the response I just discovered another problem I don't know whether you've come across it or not but all of a sudden I can't shift from one gear to the other without shutting the machine off it'll just grind it's never done that before would you have any idea what that might be ?

I'm guessing you don't have the belt guard installed. It needs to be on in order for the drive belt to stop. :)
