What hardware are you using to attach?

Uses the factory screws, or if you've done some modification and use small bolts that works too. That part will be designed just a bit thicker than the original lens, but will have screw pockets down to original thickness so you can use original hardware.

You can also use rivets of the correct size

The fiberglass hoods really held up well.  It's a shame WH didn't use the same material for the rear fenders on the B/C-XX5 and D250 tractors instead of that cheap ABS plastic.  And, unlike the steel ones, the FRP hoods don't rust under the paint.

The FRP hood on the C-161-Twin was a time-crunch rush required to fit the Briggs twin cylinder engine rather than the self-destructing KT17's that had been planned in the abandoned C-171.  Who knows why they went with a unique headlamp assembly, but I'd be willing to bet it was a mistake made when dimensioning the drawings or something.  It was out of character for WH to not use carryover parts, especially on a limited run tractor.

Steve

I need to correct this.  I think I got my memories crossed up, but after seeing a picture of the cancelled c-171 on the cover of the 1979 brochure it reminds me that the fiberglass hood must not have been a rush job to accommodate the Briggs.  Looks like the glass hood may have been on the c171 prototypes too.

I remember having a conversation about this with Ed from toro at the show and there was a story there, but I don’t remember the details.  Might be that the glass hood had to be hastily modified to accommodate the Briggs muffler.

anyway, I goofed.

I really should have finished writing that book...

? for you 3D ... how well you think your lens will stand up to the heat of regular bulbs? Some of my horses just don't play well or look right with LEDS.

The outter frame should be fine for sure. Its abs no melty at all till over 200 degrees C. Now the lens is a 1/8th inch thick piece of acryllic. So far mine has been fine, but over a REALLY long use I'm honestly not sure. BUT thats one more reason to make it replaceable. If we find a good substitute that works better the lens can be replaced easily, it is simple square cuts and nests between the 2 halves. If the lens gets cracked, scratched or damaged, or you want to go with frosted or tinted lenses you can!

It'll be close. Anyone able to get a horizontal hole spacing in mm to go with that?

@roadapples@ebinmaine

How are ya'lls lenses holding up? Had any chance to put some extended headlight  time in?

I might be able to get something off the hood holes but might not be accurate enough. Hopefully you will have enough of Bob's to go off of.

Looking at my pic it seems the hole dims are different top and bottom. Looking at Bob's it appears they are not.

Craig @cschannuth did you say you have a good one to measure off of?

If at all possible, the best way to measure this is with a piece of paper or cardstock, Wrap it against the hood, or curve of the lens, and punch center, then lay flat and measure. Theres a slight curve that just measuring across doesn't account for.

Its just a mm or 2 but I have to make the front and rear different lengths as well to account for that curve, as well as provide a little space for the inserted lens to curve too. Amazing how many little things come into play.

I can get some measurements off of my tractor if I have to and I think I have an older one somewhere that’s cracked that may still help with measurements.

With what bob is sending, as long as I have the EXACT spacing of even just the top holes OR bottom holes I can be sure we'll be good. With just bobs example I can come REALLY close, but prefer to be sure as we can be.

Mine is holding up extraordinarily well but it's important to consider that it's still sitting on the shelf. Not on a tractor.

It's destined for Cinnamon next time I have something that needs to be done to that tractor.

Light bulbs on mine will be LEDs so I don't foresee heat to be an issue.

The horizontal distance between the top holes is 28.7 cm. The distance between the bottom holes is just shy of 27.4.

And the tape is down into the bend of the lens as best as possible?

Another issue is that's 12 inches long, I'm not sure it will squeeze onto the 8 inch machine. I'll have to get the new MAX in. I had been holding off...now I've got a good excuse!

The lens is actually perfectly flat and that’s how I measured it so it should be pretty accurate. The holes also have a bevel to allow the screws to mount flush with the face of the lens.
