WheelhorseBob 1,549 #1 Posted May 12, 2021 Hi guys, I'm going to finalize my decision on the C121 restoration. It will be a C121 with electric lift or a C161 with electric lift. It’s a 1978 and I have a metal hood or the early fiberglass black hood. What I don’t have is a good headlight lens for the black hood. I’m leaning towards that as I do not have a black hood in the stable but if I can’t source a lens I’m stuck. Any insight is appreciated. WBob.

I believe that this would be correct for a fiberglass black hood. https://wheelhorsepartsandmore.com/product/98-1713-7075-103771-toro-wheel-horse-headlight-lens-with-decal/
Wheel Horse 3D 3,795 #5 Posted May 12, 2021 If Dan is correct, and the year you provided(1978) i have this one off of a c141 the same year model. Ive replaced it with of my 3d printed ones and ill part with the original at a good price.
cschannuth 3,816 #6 Posted May 12, 2021 The 78 lens was an oddball and may have also been used for 1979. I don’t have a close-up of it but this is what mine looks like and they are like hens teeth. If anybody has a source, I would like to have an extra as well. 1
Wheel Horse 3D 3,795 #7 Posted May 12, 2021 I can 3d print a replacement version just like i did for the common lenses. Lenses can be kept clear, frosted, or even tinted and swap out easy.
SPINJIM 1,981 #8 Posted May 12, 2021 The headlight lens for the fiberglass hood is different than the one for the metal hoods, and as rare as hen's teeth (as has been said). There was one here on the Forum about a year ago, when the owner didn't know what kind of hood it fit. Maybe he still has it. The fiberglass hoods don't hold up very well. They dry out, flake, and tend to crack from vibrations, etc. similar to the plastic fenders. I'd stay with the metal hood and the easier to find headlight lens.
Wheel Horse 3D 3,795 #9 Posted May 12, 2021 Rare as Hens Teeth is right up my alley..lemme throw together a quick model to give folks an idea. Of course it wouldn't be as desirable as a factory mint, or for that MINT show tractor, but it would get lenses to horses that need 'em.
Wheel Horse 3D 3,795 #10 Posted May 12, 2021 There we go..just a general idea, overall construction the same as the others. Can easily be customized if someone wanted with logo etc., but otherwise should print well.
wh500special 2,187 #11 Posted May 12, 2021 That lens is unique to the C-161-twins and the E-141 electric tractor. Not interchangeable with anything else. I sold one (Thanks Craig!!) on the classifieds a short while ago. For such an unusual piece, it had a surprising lack of interest...kind of a common theme among WH guys to focus on the common instead of the exotic. Wheel Horse 3D 3,795 #12 Posted May 12, 2021 The nice thing about the 3d printer, is it can be printed as needed. I don't have to carry a stock or anything so I can do one off or custom items easily. So that one piece only one person needs...no problem!

I don't disagree but the metal hood that I have is rusted through from the muffler heat affected zone. The Fiberglass hood is in excellent shape with the exception of the head light lens.

I could remove the one I have, it may have enough left to get dimensions from. Let me know.

It's a shame WH didn't use the same material for the rear fenders on the B/C-XX5 and D250 tractors instead of that cheap ABS plastic. And, unlike the steel ones, the FRP hoods don't rust under the paint. The FRP hood on the C-161-Twin was a time-crunch rush required to fit the Briggs twin cylinder engine rather than the self-destructing KT17's that had been planned in the abandoned C-171. Who knows why they went with a unique headlamp assembly, but I'd be willing to bet it was a mistake made when dimensioning the drawings or something. It was out of character for WH to not use carryover parts, especially on a limited run tractor. Steve Edited May 12, 2021 by wh500special

Wheel Horse 3D 3,795 #24 Posted May 12, 2021 The frame is printed in an abs plastic that is not so rigid and brittle and forms to the tractor body better and isn't prone to cracking.(Ever seen a cracked LEGO?). It would have to be VERY cold to crack one of these even if you over tightened a screw.
