Wheel Horse battery / batteries

Recommended Posts

Hello horse riders,

I hope this topic will contribute to this forum. I haven't posted much on this forum but when I have 'a problem to solve' I share so that other people can learn from it (or just for entertainment purposes of course :)).

Now my battery is flat/bad and I want to buy a new one. Attached is a picture of my current battery. This 'new one' was already there when I bought the tractor.

I think the original batteries are no longer on the market? Is there any information available on what batteries are the orginal ones? On my 211-5 (1986) and perhaps other horses?
The current battery is 12V and 14 AH. But it may be on the weak side.. Perhaps a 18Ah is better? At a website I also see an 55 Ah !?..

Any suggestions?

*By the way, i find it hard to search the forum, there are just to many search results. So if this topic is a duplicate my apologies.

Perhaps there is a way to further or better streamline the information on this forum? (this off course is also a compliment because of the amount of info on this forum....) :eusa-clap:

Best regards,

I am not real familiar with vertical shaft models, but I would think that it should take a common lawn tractor battery. The battery you have now looks more like a motorcycle or ATV battery.

You have quite some space left in there, probably you need a U1. i buy the U1-R because there are cheaper, but they are taller, don't know if it will fit in you mower.

A battery the will fit in there is probably going to be around 14-22Ah capacity (a "real" 55Ah battery is gone be to big). If you need a battery that will start faster, you have to look at the (Cold) cranking amps CCA.  230-350CCA, the higher the number the easier it will be for the battery to run the starter-motor at full speed.

This is the typical type/style battery -(group size U1) most of us use here in the states (the one in your tractor appears to be same size/type) We generally go by the 'CCA' rating (cold cranking amps) The 275 CCA  on this one seems plenty.

I personally use this particular battery in all my horses - up to and including the big 'D' series. It is sold here in the huge Wal Mart stores for about $30 with trade in/core charge

 only $30! a U1 is here around $200.  so i go with a U1-r as it's about $80 cheaper.

I believe that in the Netherlands, you are paying for the cost of disposal for the battery up front, when you buy it. It makes you more aware of the "full life cycle" cost, especially when in your rather compact country waste landfills are few and very highly regulated.

We here in the US, when faced with having to pay someone to handle disposal, have been known to simply dump things into landfills.
