Achto 27,604 #26 Posted May 10, 2021 In an attempt to pull this train back on the tracks I've been researching your first question @JCM. I have found the definition of a mule drive. Belt drive systems commonly known as mule drives are used to transmit power from a horizontally oriented drive shaft or PTO to vertically oriented spindles. Mule drives for mower decks include one or more guide sheaves that twist the belt to change its orientation from vertical to horizontal. Just can't find an origin for the name. 2

Go to Ebay type in mule drive and find the answer. All mule drives were a pain to install and remove until Wheel Horse jumped light years ahead of the rest with the Attach-A- Matic System. 3

And prone to failure - I think I have had to rebuild mine half a dozen times. each time gets more difficult. A WH drive will occasionally wear out a bearing, but otherwise .... it just keeps on Keeping on.

What makes you think I’d have a dumb question to ask?

Wheel Horse 3D 3,795 #42 Posted May 10, 2021 Maybe the term mule drive originated during the 18 and early 1900's and just kinda stuck for the portion that transfers the belt power from horizontal to vertical and vise versa 1 1 1
EricF 589 #43 Posted May 10, 2021 I've seen "mule drive" also refer to other forms of connecting the engine output to drive another mechanism with a reduction drive or other arrangement -- not necessarily making a change in belt orientation; just transferring the drive source from one part of the machinery to another to where there's a gearbox or complex belt drive or some sort at the other end. John Deere garden tractors, at least on the 112 series I was familiar with growing up, had the mule drive to the mower deck more or less permanently attached between the frame sides just below the PTO. I don't recall it ever being called a "mule drive" though, just "Belt Tensioner" or similar. Lots of different names for the same kind of mechanical arrangement.
Wheel Horse 3D 3,795 #44 Posted May 10, 2021 (edited) Can imagine the meeting where they named the parts..."You know like one of those old thingies where they used a belt and mules!"... Wheel Horse 3D 3,795 #45 Posted May 10, 2021 ook heres my stupid question, since a mule is the combination of a Horse and a donkey, what happens when I put my *butt* in the seat of the Wheel Horse? Is now a Wheel Mule?
