Stupid Question Section

In an attempt to pull this train back on the tracks I've been researching your first question @JCM. I have found the definition of a mule drive.

Belt drive systems commonly known as mule drives are used to transmit power from a horizontally oriented drive shaft or PTO to vertically oriented spindles. Mule drives for mower decks include one or more guide sheaves that twist the belt to change its orientation from vertical to horizontal.

Just can't find an origin for the name.

THANK YOU        I figured when I started this the answer had a good chance to come from Wisconsin.   Good work Dan.   :occasion-xmas:

Why doesn’t all the brightness escape when a light bulb breaks?

It does... when Karl has the Christmas lights up at the top and we get to break them that's what keeps the screens lit up. Must be PFM!

Jim, the plunger will be in the truck at the Show, just in case we need it to hit Dan over the head with it.  :ROTF:

Go to Ebay type in mule drive and find the answer. All mule drives were a pain to install and remove until Wheel Horse jumped light years ahead of the rest with the Attach-A- Matic System.

And prone to failure - I think I have had to rebuild mine half a dozen times. each time gets more difficult. A WH drive will occasionally wear out a bearing, but otherwise .... it just keeps on Keeping on.

Well we were doing good until page 6 from @ebinmaine , as I started to scroll down I started to see @Achto  's name and said to myself I can only imagine what i would read. And to think we have not even heard from @pullstart  and  @WHX24  yet, Oh boy.

Here’s (probably a dumb) question...

What makes you think I’d have a dumb question to ask?  :ROTF:

We get all our safety tips on what not to do. It has probley saved 5 pints of blood for the rest of us. There might have a benefit to getting your blood changed regularly.

Maybe the term mule drive originated during the 18 and early 1900's and just kinda stuck for the portion that transfers the belt power from horizontal to vertical and vise versa

I've seen "mule drive" also refer to other forms of connecting the engine output to drive another mechanism with a reduction drive or other arrangement -- not necessarily making a change in belt orientation; just transferring the drive source from one part of the machinery to another to where there's a gearbox or complex belt drive or some sort at the other end.

John Deere garden tractors, at least on the 112 series I was familiar with growing up, had the mule drive to the mower deck more or less permanently attached between the frame sides just below the PTO. I don't recall it ever being called a "mule drive" though, just "Belt Tensioner" or similar. Lots of different names for the same kind of mechanical arrangement.

Can imagine the meeting where they named the parts..."You know like one of those old thingies where they used a belt and mules!"... "Mule???... drive????".... "Yeah that'll work!"

So my presence in no way effects the pedigree of the horse, my butt pedigree is defined by the horse. Gotcha! As it should be i guess!:ROTF:

Why did they HAVE TO rivet the throttle & choke on the dash !?!?!?

And rivet the headlight assembly to the hood on B and C series.

They had the rivets and needed a place to use them. It worked out good until you wanted to take it apart.
