Achto 28,777 #4 Posted May 7, 2021 I prefer the detent ball. The hog ring jambs up, wears out, and eventually falls off. 2 minutes ago, oliver2-44 said: Don't have a clue what your asking about! The device used to hold the socket on to the tool.

I got a air powered Snap off with the ring and the ring is gone. Really ticks a guy off when the socket goes a rollin.... Maxwell-8 4,366 #6 Posted May 7, 2021 (edited) For sure the detent ball. Is a proven design. on old rachets. Have had hog rings just snap. 24 minutes ago, squonk said: Neither one seem to work for to long with everyday shop use. What will? squonk 42,522 #7 Posted May 7, 2021 Detent ball spring breaks and as the socket square hole wears it will fall off the impact.

As I stated the spring for the ball breaks. The hog ring style the nose of the gun wears out especially if you use chrome sockets on them. Chrome sockets also reduce the impact power when taking off a stuck bolt or nut. The ring groove will wear and get peened over. Now I'm talkin using it everyday in an auto shop. I still have my 40 yr. old Ingersoll impact. I think the ring is still on it. I changed it a few times but it really doesn't do much good with the worn anvil. And as the socket wears it gets worse. Pullstart 64,529 #9 Posted May 8, 2021 I’ve got an impact gun... bought it in high school from a drunk kid for $20. It was missing the hog ring and still is. I don’t mind holding the socket in place, that thing still rocks! 1

19richie66 17,576 #11 Posted May 9, 2021 Don’t use chrome sockets on impacts..... wear eye protection if you do. Just saying. As for the question, have had both. Ball/pin last longer if you take care of them. Hog ring is easy to replace 👍
DennisThornton 4,771 #12 Posted May 9, 2021 Chrome plating can crack and peel back a bit creating a very sharp edge that can shred a lot of meat off your fingers before you even know what happened.
squonk 42,522 #13 Posted May 9, 2021 I've seen guys hammering away with an impact with a chrome socket not accomplishing anything but using air and wearing out tools. put an impact socket on and ZIPPPP!!!! 1
