Mike in NC 341 #1 Posted May 7, 2021 Well, I picked up the 701 and started cleaning it some. I only used a hose and bucket washed it some. I need to remove the hood again and clean the engine up. The serial number is 54817. I checked the gas tank and it was spotless, I was surprised. Fuel shut off valve even turned. Someone in the past replaced the dash with a piece of metal but it still has everything it should except the original key switch. It was replaced with a 5 prong Indak switch, I plan on replacing it. I had to replace a couple wires and hook everything back up. It was unhooked to bypass the switch in the past to get running. I checked engine oil, it was clean, I will be changing it soon. I just wanted to see if it would run. Hooked up a jump box to see if it would turn over and it did. Next IO checked for spark and it had spark. A surprise for sitting for about 5 years or so. Sprayed a little brake clean in the carb and it fired right up. I then added some gas, it took a little bit to start pumping gas but it ran!! It needs tires as the are all rotted and one rear tire has a hole in it about 3 inches long. Was there a factory seat cover/cushion for these? I will gather parts when I can as this is not a top project. There are several others in front of this one. But I can say that I now have a 701!! 4

I'm not sure, all the ones that I have seen have been slip over covers. Edited May 7, 2021 by Achto
Racinbob 11,081 #6 Posted May 7, 2021 That's a nice solid 701. I picked up a cover from @buckrancher for my 854 at the big show. You could contact him to see if he has more.
Mike in NC 341 #7 Posted May 7, 2021 When these came out did they just have the metal seat or was a cover optional? I have seen the seat covers like the one above. I will try to get a pic of what is left of the seat cover that is one it and post it.

To my knowledge they came with just a steel seat. I looked at the attachment and accessories list. I see the optional back rest but not the seat cover. ri702bill 8,321 #11 Posted May 8, 2021 Mike: Nice looking '61 Round Hood - great patina. Seems to be 98% complete - only parts missing are the 701 only rear guard at the brake drum (no slot for the parking brake lever - 701's did not have one) and the triple pulley on the gear drive deck. Too bad about the rot on those rear tires. I had picked up a very low hour 702 for parts a while back - it had the BFG Silvertown tires that still had the spiny nipples on them, but they were rotted beyond use. Check the cast iron rectangular plate on the underside of the deck for cracks - they can break if you hit something solid while mowing. Great find.
