Rusty rear rims

Recommended Posts

Herder

Tube and load them.  These wheel are in good shape but the tires had some dry cracking and bit leaky.  All fixed.

Wow! Thank you to everyone for such amazing advice. Going to pick up the rims this afternoon and see what I can do.

So, I tried using the tractor to spin the wheel while I used a wire brush to remove rust, but the wheel would stop with the slightest pressure. Is this normal?
granted, I was a little cautious with the throttle because the old girl was rather precariously balanced on two small car jacks. 🤷‍♀️

Yepp.

Your tractor has a standard type differential without positraction.

Any pics of what you're doing?

How you're holding the tractor up?

Try to get one wheel off the ground and one on.

That'll spin.

I had to take it down because I needed the jack for a trip. Doing the electrolysis bath method now. Hoping for some clean wheels!

The bath is working, but I  have questions...

How much washing soda do I need to put in an 18 gal container?

Do I need to replace the water and soda periodically?

I soaked one wheel for 3 days, and 70% of the rust came off, but there is some really stuck on black stuff, maybe fix-a-flat, that is not coming loose.  Certainly easier than sanding!

@pullstart could answer the quantity question.

Was the black substance there before you dunked the rims?

It's possible you may need/want to remove that by hand just to "dig in" to the layers some.

How much?  It seems like a consistency that feels slimy on your hands when you feel it.  I think the more you add, the more conductive it becomes.  Replace?  Nope.  It gets pretty nasty looking but it keeps on working!  The black stuff seems like a byproduct of the solution and flash rust, but I use water and my hands to rub it off and it seems pretty successful.  Any remaining can be wire brushed as well.

@ebinmaine yes, it was there before. Almost looks like hardened tar. Does not seem to soften with soaking. I think it will need to be sanded off.

Thanks, @pullstart!

Given that that's on the inside of the wheel and it's a fairly steady surface the easiest way to remove that might very well be to put it on the tractor and let it turn the wheel for you while you're using something like a wire brush preferably driven by a motor like on a drill or body grinder.

Same method but using sandpaper would also work just fine but you may see that that stuff comes up the paper pretty quickly whereas it shouldn't do that with a wire brush.

Sounds like "Bead Sealer".  Is it in the bead area of the wheel?

I've been able to remove it with Mineral Spirits.  Put it on a rag, wipe it, wait for it to soften, wipe some more, wait, wipe, wait, wipe.  It will eventually all come off.

There is a little on the rim, but most of it is on the middle part of the wheel. (The area that would be parallel to the ground contact part of the tire if a tire was mounted.)

Will try the spirits.

If it was liberally applied by the wheel mounter person, it could've run down to the center easily. Good luck with the spirits. BTW a recreational beverage for you might make the work more palatable

I have an old friend who is a Brick Layer.

There are many different kinds of brick 'bonds', meaning the 'pattern' that the bricks are laid.

This old friend's pattern was called the "Beer Bond".

It went like this:

BRICK BEER BRICK BEER BRICK BRICK BEER BRICK BRICK BEER BEER BRICK BEER BRICK BEER BRICK BRICK BEER BRICK BRICK BEER BEER BRICK BEER BRICK BEER BRICK BRICK BEER BRICK BRICK BEER BEER , ETC....

I saw him at a job site one day and his nose was busted and one front tooth was missing.

Seems he got his bond pattern mixed up after a few to many BEER BEER BEER BEER...
