My 414-8 won’t start. Charged & watered battery, clean terminals, fresh fuses, what gives?

We need more information.  An engine needs air, fuel, compression and a spark to run.  Is the starter turning the engine?  Did you check to see if the air filter is good and the throttle is opening?  Did you check for fuel delivery to the carburetor?  Did you check to see if the spark plug is firing as the engine turns?

Starter is not doing anything. Filter is ok, throttle open. The other questions I’ll have to study. Thanks.

Have you tried jumping it or hooking another battery to it?

tell us more about what you have and maybe a picture would help as well!

Looks like 3 different engines used in the 414-8.

What is the tractor model number?

Failing that post all the numbers of the engine decal including the serial number.

With those we should have the correct wiring diagram.

Lets take a logical step by step inspection of your starter problem. Is your PTO in the ON position, a wheel horse will not start with the PTO on.

Take a pair of automotive jumper cables and connect the black cable to the battery "-" and a good clean spot on the engine. Now connect the other cable to the large post on the starter and touch the other end to the battery "+" terminal, does the starter turn over? If the starter turns over the battery and starter are good. If it didn't turn over try the same steps with the battery in your car/truck, if that cures the problem then the "good" battery wasn't so good.

Presuming the starter turned over move the jumper wire from the starter post to the other end of the wire going to the starter which is one of the large posts on the solenoid. If the tarter turns over when the battery is touched by the jumper as before then that cable is good, if not you have found your problem.

Presuming the starter turned over move that jumper to the other terminal of the solenoid, connect the other end to the battery and use a small piece of wire to temporarily connect the battery "+" terminal to the small terminal on the solenoid, this should cause the solenoid to close and the starter to turn over.

Do you have a voltmeter? How many volts are in that charged battery?

If you determine the battery and starter are good, don't replace any parts like cables, key switch, and solenoid before you clean all grounds and connections first.  Cleaning the grounds and connection points, and I mean clean with wire brushes and sand paper so the terminals touch metal and not paint, but this has resolved most of my no power to starter issues.  Still could be a bad part but this will save you time and money in the long run...I learn the hard way so what can I say...

Too much red

I just ran into this problem with mine 2 weeks ago. My issue was the pto switches. The top switch had got misaligned and even with the PTO handle in the off position, the switch still wasn't made. I took it loose and moved it back into place and she fired right up. Hope this helps

Thanks everyone for responding. Weekend warrior here, I cleaned connections ,replaced & adjusted spark plug. She fires up. Now won’t run at full throttle. I’ll do some digging. I know there is something in the forum about this sputtering. Great community here!

Did you disassemble and clean out the carburetor?

Not needed now but believe your tractor has a 15 amp charging system. The diagrams in the Demystification Guide and the operator manual are not correct showing 3 amp so here is a corrected version.

newbie, have you tried to run your horse on a  separate gallon of gas ? without a doubt your fuel tank and related carb and hose connections do not help you. when i am trying to get a strange unit going , i eliminate as many problems as i can , fuel  is easy , separate gallon jug feeding fuel pump is easy . if that makes it run well , your tractor fuel system needs a refresh , tank, filters, lines ,carb clean . another thing i  have found is the electrical multiple plug in ports , are often dried and cracked , leading to no starts , replace the plug ins ,and dielectric grease every connection . hope this might help out , it worked for me , pete
