Wellingtontx 69 #126 Posted June 17, 2021 Well the two halves go together smooth as butter - with a couple of hang-ups. First, knocked the axle shaft seal out so i have to replace that. Second, I have searched my boxes of parts and cannot find any case bolts - totally missing. Never thought they would be gone. Anyone have any idea what size grade 8 bolts I need to assemble the case ? I assume they have a nut and lock washer ?
kpinnc 12,130 #127 Posted June 17, 2021 (edited) Lengths vary a bit, but 3/8 x 16 with good nyloc nuts. Grab a tape measure and check across both halves at each bolt hole when the case is closed. Add 1/2 inch to each one for a safe length. No washers needed. I think all but the long one at the hitch pin is about the same. Wellingtontx 69 #129 Posted June 19, 2021 Well this transmission is kicking by rear. Thought I had it but I don’t. Does not appear to want to shift into all gears. Had it all together now back apart. Need some help and advice before I give up. Did install new 2nd/3rd gear and new but in better shape shift forks. New indent balls and spring. The closet fork will not move to the right which would be downward in the case. I guess first of all, should it move downward ? Second, any ideas on how to fix ? The shift fork will move to left, just not right.
Wellingtontx 69 #130 Posted June 19, 2021 (edited) Tapping it with hammer won’t get it to move either. back shift fork moved up and down easily Edited June 19, 2021 by Wellingtontx
Handy Don 12,244 #131 Posted June 19, 2021 Obstructed. Is the detent ball out of place?
Wellingtontx 69 #132 Posted June 19, 2021 I don’t think so since it moves up but I can take it all back apart and see
stevasaurus 22,767 #133 Posted June 19, 2021 I would check it. It seems to be the issue. The ball is not in the right place and you are fighting the spring. If the spring is messed up...you should be able to bend it back in shape.
Wellingtontx 69 #134 Posted June 19, 2021 Taking all apart now….stay tuned
Wellingtontx 69 #135 Posted June 19, 2021 Well done for the day, Frustrated. Messed with the spring and double indent balls about 15 times without success. Whoever designed this system of double indent balls needs to be taken out back and kicked in the shin a 100 times. Idiot engineering. Finally, one of the indent balls shot out and across the garage. Cannot locate and 100 degrees in garage. So done for the day. Might try to reassemble in morning.
stevasaurus 22,767 #136 Posted June 19, 2021 Use a 1/8" Allen wrench to push the ball in from the outside hole. The 2nd/3rd shift rail needs to be in neutral in order to push the ball in far enough. Get the 1st/reverse shift rail down onto the Allen wrench and pull the wrench out while pushing down on the shift rail. Watch this video from about the first minute. I lost a detent ball as well on my rebuild (several times). I even had mine together and bench tested and on the tractor then had a hi/ lo shift failure. Before a test drive. You will get it. When you purchase a new ball get extra lol 2
oliver2-44 9,765 #139 Posted July 19, 2021 (edited) @Wellingtontx Just checking in on your transmission repair. Hopefully you've got it licked, But if not, There's always some help here. My first 3 piece transmission for a Suburban took a lot of tries and coaching from these guys to get the axle bushings honed not to tight and not to loose. WHX?? 48,834 #140 Posted March 24, 2022 Older thread here @burekvid hopefully he got it by now. Ever find out how he made out @oliver2-44? @Achto and I just assembled his and gave us a small amount of grief. Grease was our friend in getting things to stay where they were supposed to be.
