Rebuild WH 5091 8 speed - anybody rebuild ?

Recommended Posts

I have these if you need them. The original owner drove it with a busted axle bearing, so the diff end caps and axles were ruined. The rest of the gears look fine. Dirty, but decent shape.

@Wellingtontx There is a large Antique tractor and Engine show in Temple the first weekend in October hosted by Texas Early Day Tractor and Engine Association.  It is one of the bigger shows around, and they have quite a few permanent displays on their grounds including a Cotton Gin and a large pavilion full of giant antique engines, of which some run.  The number of Garden Tractors there is growing each year.  This past year I would say there were around 40 Gt's of all brands. Probable 100 old tractors and a good group of hit and miss engines.  As it gets closer maybe we can get several of the Texas guys to meet there.

I too would like to go to the Big WH Show, but its not in the cards this year.

That is great information on the Texas Show.  I would love to go if it fits into the schedule.  I will start looking to see if I can make it happen,

You would probably be OK with that.  It's the grooves that mater here. If you decide to keep that bolt, I would replace the 1/4" ball for sure. I think I would replace the bolt if I could easily find one.  Actually, TORO may have new ones...it would be worth a call.  :occasion-xmas:

You can find those balls for cheap at ACE and such places.

Thank you prompt reply.

I do have the replacement balls on hand.

The bolt can be ordered - but a little pricey.  I think I may put a hold on things and just break down and order the bolt.   Only want to rebuild once.   LOL

Duke, that whole piece comes as one unit from TORO...$57.  Takes about 2 or 3 days to get.

Trying to find on Toro.  Any idea on what part number they use ?  I have tried 3-40; 7209 and 11636.

Try using #3503.

Mmmm. 3503 comes up as the fork shift, part 3-50.

I will keep looking.

Thanks Stevd

That is what you want...it is a one piece unit.

Not sure what schematic you are looking at.  3-33 is just a page number with a part numbered.  When you go to the 3-33 you will see Part # 3503...that is the hi/low shift fork assembly.  $57

On the other hand, there are plenty of guys that have changed out that part, they might have the bolt that comes with that.  Just need to ask in the Classifieds, and in here if you want.

OK...I see what you are looking at...3-57 is the détente bolt...that is TORO Part #7213.  that is just the bolt...that will fix what you have.  3-33 is the whole unit...TORO Part #3503.

Does that make sense??

Part #3-33 is the full part of the sum of 3-57, 3-59, 3-61 & 3-60.

From everything being completely rusted over and in three boxes with absolutely no idea how it came apart, feel good about the progress.

Would simply not have tackled the project without the help, encouragement and videos on this forum.  Hopefully will get things buttoned up later this week.

Just hoping everything works once I get it together - fingers triple crossed.

Now as far as transmission oil - I see in the manual that it says two quarts; however, I don't see an actual oil spec.  On the internet I see comments about everything from 30 weight engine oil to 90-140 gear oil.

What is the recommended 8 speed oil specs ?

90 wt gear oil is the oil of choice.  80/90 wt is just fine.  Your transmission looks fantastic...nice job.  :occasion-xmas:  Once you close it up, turn the input shaft counter-clockwise in all gears before you put it back in the horse.  If it all works, and it looks like it will, add 2 qts and start out easy until the oil works itself in.  :handgestures-thumbupright:
