212-5 starter motor and solonoid lever ?

Recommended Posts

bertusjan78

hello i am from holland and have a toro wheel horse 212-5 and enjoing it

but now ik is not starting i pulled the solonoid and when i manually press the plunjer it starts !!

but now when i put the solonoid back the starter motor starts running ( not engaging the motor just the elektric motor )

so maybe the solonoid is broken and shorts the plus to the motor but what is that lever inside ?? where the top plastic cap is to be in ?

i cannot open it to put it in and when i tried to take out the starter itself the backbolt wil  not go al the way down and i can not see how to take the starter itself out to open it and test its working

can someone help ?

kind regards bertus

Welcome to the forum.

Do you have the tractor's model number and serial number?

Will guess you have the Onan produced motor. They also used Briggs & Stratton and Kawasaki engines in the 212-5.

These may not be correct.

hello thank you for your answer i have to look up the numbers

but the starter is mounted different from the files the solenoid is boulted with 2 nuts from the top but the starter itself is boult douwn from untherneeth with 2 very long screws ( long bolt and nut ( but the back bolt wil not be removed when loosend  and even then the starter will not drop far enough to be removed

as seen on the photo the front bolt can be removed but there is one at the back and the starter wil not drop enough to be removed it seems the whole motor needs to be removed first ( i cannot believe that ) is rests on the red chassis

here you see a side view with solenoid removed  and startermotor still in place it can only be removed by screws on the bottom

but even then it cannot drop enough te be removed becouse the chassis is in the way

and how to get the top of the solonoid ( that plastic peace into the vork witch is on the inside top housing ? is that a lever that goes from solonoid to startermotor like a bendix in a normal automotive ??

This illustration shows shorter bolts holding the starter on. Two coming down from the top.

Also a nut holding oil tube from underneath side of starter. You need to remove cowl from top of motor. Just had mine off. Problem with mine was you have to make sure that you get the plunger  inside Grove  in starter. Can't just push it in.

Top of solenoid is not a nut. That goes into the plastic fork inside the housing on the starter. To reinstall solenoid. The starter housing has to be removed from motor. I just did this on my 212. Took forever to figure it out. New solenoid did the same as the old one. Now I have a spare.

hello and sorry for my late reply

whe fixed the problem :-)

first silly me i tried to take the startermotor of but i dit dismantled id with the litle srews  after some time sitting at the tractor i decided whell lets take it all appart motor everything

and when we took the top of  i saw the nuts for holding the starter in place  so pfffffffffff luck   the we took it down  separated the realy cleaned evrthing inside with sandpaper and the starter run perfectly and now the relay was removed i could put the plastic pin / head  in its right place so in the top vork

then we started whell sometimes it did and sometimes not

after checking the wiring  i descoverd that the white power wire to te startersrelay ( where youre right foot is unther the hood )  was nog making a bad connection

after examination it turned oud that all the female pins who  are unther the realy were to wide and not connecting good

for good messureases i orderd a new solonoid an replaced all the connectors and i starts perfectly !!

as seen unther a happy camper

thans a lot for helping out stay safe and thnx again !!

best regards bertus
