1971 800 Workhorse restoration help 0100

Recommended Posts

Kyle G Cantrell

Trying to restore a 1971 Wheel horse Workhorse 800 model 0100, It has a tecumseh HH80-110112D.
I cannot find any parts at all for this one, I’ve checked everywhere I can think online. This is my first restore, looking for some help to find parts or what I can use (swap) to keep it close to original but also functional.

Also the fly wheel has two **** that stick up off it that the coil passes and one is broke off. Is that a problem, I’m a mechanic but this thing is old and with no info it’s a guessing game.

Parts needed so far:

 right side running bored/footrest

Left side engine cover

right side pulley cover

Ignition coil

Main drive pulley bearings

Hitch pin (goes through trans case)

*NEW TO SITE, WILL CHANGE IF POST INCORRECT*

:WRS:   For these parts you might want to place an add in our classified section.

Kyle  :WRS:   I think to make it easer for you I would just find a 8hp Kholer. Still a good part source. The Tecky parts are drying up fast. But it is up to you. What ever you decide enjoy the project.

I have to ask, it seems there’s a Kyle Cantrell on SXM radio on the Bluegrass Channel.  Any relation, or coincidence?  There are many short frame tractors with floorboards and it shouldn’t be terrible to find one locally.  I believe I have a good one, but wouldn’t imagine shipping one is cheap.

Agreed, they are much easier to find!

No relation, I think that’s a religious band!

I'm still curious about this. :confusion-confused:

512593194_teckypoints.png.91cba56518defa1f7aba2ede80403a05.pngAre you talking about these?  If so, they are called trigger pins. No idea what they do. You need a Tecky expert.

Apparently the censurer prefers "pins" over "T I T S".:D

The manual linked above will tell you about the two trigger pins.  Are you sure your ignition module (Solid State) is bad missing pin (trigger) would cause no spark or miss timed spark....?  Used show up on Ebay but they are pricey.  Google Tecumseh Solid State ignition replacement there are some options to modify the ignition system.

Pretty sure both pins have to be there for the ignition to work. Do know they

are at two different heights.

Kyle - I have the same exact tractor all restored fancy so let me help you.

First thing is the two pins on the flywheel... One is supposed to be taller than then the other, it's fine.  [It fires off the taller one during starting as automatic start retard and then the short one when running to advance the timing.]

For the footrest, covers and hitch pin you will have to scrounge around.  Suggest Wheel Horse Junkies on FB. They can help.

As for the Ignition coil, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you contact
Dale Colvert  262-391-6670
Overnight  Solutions
TCDI II Ignition for Tecumseh

He can tell you how to measure your stator to ensure it's the module and not the stator (or something else) that's bad.

I just installed one of Dales Ignition Kits and it is EXCELLENT. To get it to fit my HH-80 engine I just had to trim some of the screws on the back and bend the bracket SLIGHTLY so the screws wouldn't ground out on the engine block.  I also filed the slots just a bit on the ends for ease of installation.

Much hotter spark than stock and very noticeable increase in power.

Main drive pulley bearings - It's been a long time since I rebuilt a transmission so I have to pass on that one.  The guys on the FB can help you with that.  I do remember that I got all my flat roller bearings from a bearing and seal specialty house.  MUCH cheaper than Toro/Wheel Horse.

Picked up a 1972 Commando 800 w/36” rear discharge. From the grandson of the original owner. Hasn’t run in decades but have no doubt that with some cleaning up of carb, fuel system and check the head, it will run like a Horse.
Has anyone ever seen the steering cap logo like this?

I need to buy tubes or new rear tires for my 1971 Workhorse 800.  It has the original 22.5x7.50-12 Wheelhorse branded tires but sidewalls are leaking and one no longer holds air for more that two days.  Searching websites brings up various sizes but not the original.  Would a 23x9.50-12 fit this tractor?  I have a 36" RD deck on it.  Any other sizes work on this rim and tractor?

      Thanks!
