scifi4all 6 #1 Posted June 4, 2009 Before spring began I realized that two of my spindles needed replaced and since I had the time the deck needed some work if it was going to last (ie...I can't afford a new one at this time). the closest model # and manual I could find was for a 1971 #5-7366. The only difference between this year an mine appears to be a 1/4" rod that keeps the lift frame from pulling out of the two deck hanger brackets. I stripped the rust and paint. Had a friend patch a hole and weld new cover bolts to the shell. Repainted everything with rattle cans, except the underside of the deck where I used POR15 Gray, self-etching primer, and Hardnose in Light Red. Replaced the belt, idler pulley, wheels, and installed new bolts. I did reuse the blades since they were replaced only a couple of years ago. Also thanks to Terry for making me new decals. I had posted a thread about getting a new leveler rod in which TT recommended an appliance store. I did just that only to find that none i fould so far were long enough. So I just made one from the original and an HVAC equipment rubber hanger isolator. Thanks to everyone for the help and for this site and its vast knowledge base. It now cuts as it did 10 years ago and I hope it lasts longer than that.
Lane Ranger 11,060 #2 Posted June 4, 2009 Rolls: Great work and your posting will assist others with tackling such a job. I completed a POR-15 paint job on the undercarriage of two of my B-80's 36 inch mower decks's in April. I used two coats of clear Por-15 and 2 cots of their red hardened paint on top of the Por-15. The Red is not wheel horse red but the job looked like porcelain when completed. I hope the deck's last more than the next 20 years. scifi4all 6 #3 Posted June 4, 2009 Lane Ranger, I used the same number of coats of each paint and the self etching primer in between. It does look like porcelain. Great Job on yours! It is a bit $pricey$, but I hope it was worth it. I think I like the cut outs in the baffles on your first pic. I got so much loose rust out of my baffles, from pounding and using compressed air. My baffles look like your second deck. Rolls
