953 nut 55,321 #2 Posted April 13, 2021 Could be a weak spring, idler pulley on its last legs or an old belt that is in need of replacement. Good luck! 3
Lee1977 6,667 #3 Posted April 13, 2021 You will get a knocking sound if a piece of the inside of the belt is missing. 2

They could be badly out of balance also. Remove the belt to give the spindle bearings the 'wiggle test'. Sometimes the tension of the belt can mask worn bearings. They should all (including the idler) turn smoothly and be silent. If you feel any roughness or noise when turning by hand, time for some bearing replacements. 2

Does it turn smoothly or is it 'gritty' and 'crunchy' when you turn it? Most likely 2 bearings, but Cat man, ya got me on that one. I'm not familiar with the older style decks. Suggest you go to the manuals section of the forum and download the illustrated parts list for your deck so you can see what's in there. haydendavid380 759 #14 Posted April 16, 2021 A bad belt can make some bad vibrations and nasty noises. I thought my whole deck was about to come apart before I changed mine on the 312.
