If you are going to use a sealer on a gasket on cast iron, I think Permatex Aviation Sealant is best. Just a light coat. No rubbery flakes in the hydro.

I use that on Lawn Boy engine cases. Stuff is great. But it's a lot like anti-seize, it wants to stick to everything. And it does STICK!

When it was rebuilt the shop used something that I had to remove with my air operated gasket scraper, that stuff was tough but it didn't leak :handgestures-thumbupright:

It is the ease of re-entry that I do not use a sealer...and I love copper-coat.  Copper-coat is great for doing vertical gaskets...like thermostats.

@Gregor, I would almost bet your leak is from a seal.  Any oil leak in these transmissions always looks like a case gasket, but it rarely is.  :eusa-think:

@stevasaurus@pfrederi I got the parts from NAPA. The bolts I got are grade 8 3.5 inches long. They are a little longer than the original bolts. Does that matter? Also the new axle keys wiggle about 1/64" to 1/32" in the shaft. Does that matter? :thanks:

When in doubt I tend to follow the manual.  it calls for 5/16  3-1/4" bolts.... (The other version of the older Wheelamatic with a bevel gear differential did use 3-1/2"

Do not use longer bolts then what you pulled out.  I know Paul likes to change out his bolts, but it is really not necessary.  New nuts are a must.  It seems like Wheel Horse never used the length of bolts that you can readily buy.  If you have to use them, put a regular nut on them and then saw to the same length as the ones you pulled out.  Back that nut off to fix the thread.  :occasion-xmas:

You try some Loctite bearing and sleeve retainer on the axle keys

Yep.

Unless you want to have the axles re-cut.  It's only money.

I have also used tin cans. They are steel.

NAPA wanted $16 for a filter and I got a Wix from Fisher for less than half the price

Turns out the guy at Fisher Auto Parts misunderstood me and ordered a 51310. I told him it's wrong I need a 51410 :ranting: He ordered me the 51410 and it was comparable to NAPA price at $14.84 when NAPA wanted $16.99!
