DO NOT scrap those hubs tho they can be saved and given to the needy. Those older "star" ones are becoming scarce and can be saved. 4 1

stevasaurus 22,740 #28 Posted April 13, 2021 That transmission that WHX-??? showed was not from a hydro. I doubt you would ever see one like that on a hydro...too much oil involved there. Take some pictures of the process so as to help others. Thanks

Now it's time to go to work I hope the hubs come off at least the hitch pin is out I removed the screws in the hubs and sprayed everything with kroil.

cafoose 3,355 #33 Posted April 14, 2021 @stevasaurus @WHX24 I got the hubs off I soaked them overnight with kroil. The one slid right off and the other just a little coaxing with the puller I removed the case bolts and one of them needed the nut chiseled off because it rusted to almost nothing took about two minutes with a chisel and hammer I got the case separated but I can't pull it apart any further because something seems to be stopping it from going any further apart. pfrederi 17,739 #34 Posted April 14, 2021 (edited) Take off input pulley You are trying to drag its shaft out. Also when you split trannies Short side down!!! Edited April 14, 2021 by pfrederi 2 2
stevasaurus 22,740 #35 Posted April 14, 2021 Right...the input pulley and brake drum have to come off. I can't believe you would try to open that with those parts still on there. That stuff is attached to everything inside. WOW !!! Keep the shallow side down when you open it. 2
Achto 27,577 #36 Posted April 14, 2021 All pulleys have to be removed to split the cases 1

stevasaurus 22,740 #38 Posted April 14, 2021 It's OK...it's just that I would have never thought anyone would try to do that. I'll have to add..."Be sure to take off hubs, input pulley, brake drum & hitch pin before trying to open transmission" to my list of things to tell people. At least you thought to ask before you ruined things inside. 2

WHX?? 48,815 #41 Posted April 14, 2021 On the good side glad to see you are using a bearing collar behind the hub. Yep yer not the first one to do something stupid. One thing I always do now is get one side off ... the easy one.... and then disassemble the diff while still in the case and take the other side to a press. 'Cause of idiots like me these hubs getting scarce. 1

Lots less things to fall out of the inside of a hyro tranny than a gear drive..

cafoose 3,355 #45 Posted April 14, 2021 Success! I got it apart! No damage to anything! I tried to put the case back together to hold the gears inside but I'm having a hard time lining the shafts with the bearings in the case now I need to get the hydro removed and fixed
stevasaurus 22,740 #46 Posted April 14, 2021 If I am seeing ball bearings in that differential in the 2nd to the last picture, you may need another transmission to fix what is wrong with yours. Just not sure what I am looking at in that picture. You are going to take the differential apart...right. Is that a ball bearing on that 11/44 toothed gear???
squonk 41,118 #47 Posted April 14, 2021 A fine thread push bolt and 7/16" HD threaded rod or screws would eliminate a lot of potential breakage when pulling a hub that way. I made this puller and haven't broken one yet!
