Carburetor Question

Recommended Posts

RJ Hamner

Working on the single bbl carb for a 20 hp Kohler. It was running way too rich and erratic.
Ordered a rebuild kit, soaked it, scrubbed it, spray carb cleanered all the knooks and crannies, blew it out with hp air. New O rings and gaskets.
Results ......started right up, let it idle for a bit while it evened out. Slowly opened the throttle. Every thing was fine till I went to full throttle. It stumbled and quit.

Tried it several times same result.
Before I tear it down again.....any ideas on what I am looking for???

Carburetors are NOT my strong point.

Bob

Pullstart

Just before it starts to stumble, pull the choke a bit.  If it gets worse, you’re still too rich.  If it gets better, you need more fuel.  :handgestures-thumbupright:

Richen it up a bit. Sounds lean. There must be a high spped mixture screw on there somewhere.

Sorry to say but there are no mixture screws. The only adjustment is the screw on the throttle rod

I know that I will probably have to spend time in Wheel Horse purgatory but.....

This is on a 2006 GT2500 Cub Cadet that has the “idiot proof” can adjust nothin carburetor. Other than idle speed the only adjustment I can find is the float height.

Family site here Bob you shouldn't be using foul language....:ychain: silly me thinkin you was on a horse!

Try what Kev suggested that will narrow it down to too lean. Any fuel pump, if has one is fubar or fuel lines tank plugged?

Just repaired neighbors 25HP ariens. After looking at the parts cost ended up getting a knock off. It was real strange the knock off and OE were identical.

I do need to ask, it has one of those anti backfire solenoid on the bowl? I would test it if the choke test proves it is to lean. Send me a pic of the carb. if you can.

I might have one off of a single jug 20hp courage that you might have for a cup of coffee!

That comment about fuel lines got me to thinking. I use a mini visegrip to crimp the fuel lines. With the stuff I normally use it’s not a problem. I remember thinking that the fuel line on the cub was pretty heavy duty. And it’s 15 years old??? Maybe it didn’t unscripted totally???  Worth a check!

My Weed Eater had an idiot proof non adjustable carb. It had factory adjustment screws down in recesses that had been filled with a hard wax type filler. I was able to clean the filler out and got usable adjustment screws. Take a close look at your carb and see if anything looks filled over

Tried that with the same result

Tried replacing the fuel line.... no change

Tested fuel pump ... no problems with the pump.  Nice 6 inch arc to the garage floor

Just spent $38 on ebay for an aftermarket

New from Kohler = $200 (probably made by the same outfit that makes the ebay one)

And if that don't work.......I'll be callin' ya Joe

You go thru carburetors like pullstart goes thru band-aids! If I had a way to activate your printer from here I'd send some Quadrajet manuals to your printer! :)
