The standards don't slip and they don't get hot.

best to find a Wheel Horse  with a 8 pinion diff and 1" 1/8 axles.

Most any 8 speed will do the trick.  An older 6 speed however (both had 3 forward gears+reverse+hi/low.. but nomenclature changed) will find you with limited slip in the differential.  When you’re super weighted down for pulling, I’m not sure how much that matters...

The pullers found out that the limited slip was not as strong as the 8 speed.

An Early 90s 312-8 is a good start. 12 hp magnum and 1 1/8" 8 speed. Good starter machine for all weight classes depending on club rules

Yeah 10 pinion limited slips were known to break often

When in doubt on 6 or 8 or whatever it says on the hood, AND provided you have 1.125 axles-

Raise both rear wheels so they can spin freely. Roll either rear tire by hand. If the opposite wheel spins the opposite direction, it is NOT limited slip with the weaker diff. If the opposite wheel turns slower in the same direction, you have a limited slip diff.

Not only better axles, hubs are stronger, bearings are stronger and off course the diff is twice as strong.

I posted in the general topic forum and they suggested that i swing by here. I got this at an auction yesterday..i know it needs some work but was interested to know how well she would do as a puller. Any comments or advice would be appreciated. Also looking for a hood i guess. Im told its a 64 1054 c series. Thanks

The Hydros will over heat due to the over revving  if  a different sized pulley on the input shaft is used. It aerates the oil . Most 3 speed Unidrives will handle up to 35 hp and the 8 speed with the 1-1/8 inch axle and 8 pinion differentials will handle 55 hp before thing start to break. I have pulled every Unidrive and even my RJ-35 with shive belt and never had a problem. My diesel puller uses a 1963 3 speed with heavy duty 1 inch hubs.

The Unidrive in this model Wheel Horse used a spider gear type differential and would be very costly to replace (and hard to find) if broken. The axles were strong but unless you knew the history of the transmission ...........

If I remember right there was a way to swap out a later 8 pinion.

You will have to check the rules where you pull for that tractor. Most are 12" max rear rims and also the wheel base.
