R Scheer 502 #152 Posted August 9, 2021 Found a couple of photos from years ago. My sister was walking over to my place and this guy was sitting on the neighbours fence ( the hawk that is). After most of a raw chicken breast, he was quite happy to know us. We rescued him still alive and tried to nurse him, but of course that's nearly impossible. He died that evening. I don't know what happened because there were no obvious puncture wounds. ebinmaine 67,484 #167 Posted January 7, 2022 We have between 4 and 6 mourning doves here that frequent our feeders. Last night and this morning we had a snowstorm blow through up the east coast. Today we had 19 doves! That's more than I remember ever seeing at once. They're colored differently than locals. The ones visiting today have a more rosy colored chest and stomach area. At least what we here in New England call pigeon. Those are rock doves. Interestingly enough the pigeons don't come within about 4 miles of here. They all stay in town where there's more food. I think the only usable meat would be the breast, but the pic below shows the 'drumsticks' may have a bite or two on them, and the wings look fairly meaty too. Hawks seem to love them! But perhaps that is because they are slow and stupid and easy to catch. Ever wonder why 'city folk' kept pigeon coops on the rooftops of their tenements? Had a feeder that attached to the window with a suction cup, when birds landed the feeder would swing a little and tap on the window letting you know someone was eating. Chickadees loved it.
