In NY the Bluebird is the state bird. Outside of at a distance, I have yet to see one in 62 yrs! 

 

I do get a lot of Goldfinches, Cardinals and Downy Woodpeckers at my feeders

Seems like the bluebirds never left this year, I was seeing them all through the winter.  Lately though, I haven't seen as many.  I have boxes for them, but they seem to have been taken over by other birds.

We don't get bluebirds here in the yard because we are too tightly trees in. 

Neighbors across the street up the mountain have some open land. They get several pairs every year. 

 

Hummingbirds and orioles should be here anytime. 

 

We have a good variety of forest birds here. 

Occasional pass through indigo buntings and scarlet tanager are neat colorful additions.

I do really like to emulate those things and it would be great if I could think of myself as a pileated woodpecker.

A pair of tree swallows nested in this Steeler box last year.  One of them has been camped on the washline for two weeks.  Finally today a second one showed up and they started to build the nest.

 

 

The nuthatches are interesting to watch.   They don't often hold for a still pic.

I swept out my garage Saturday , had the ATV trailer in the driveway so I swept that off too .

Put ATV trailer in garage .

Went inside for an Iced tea .

Wrote 2 checks .

Went back into garage .

Pile of sticks laying on ATV trailer .

Scratched head ...I thought I swept the trailer . 

Looked up .

A momma Robin had decided my garage door opener motor would make a splendid place for her new nest .

Shooed the perpetrator out , brushed off the top of garage door opener motor , closed garage door .

Walked out man-door and Mrs. Robin was standing in front of me with a beak full of fresh sticks as if to say ......(please finish this story) .

This is a shaping machine in my garden as an industrial ornament.

Last year a pair of Robins found their way inside and made a nest.

 

The little door on the side allowed me to photograph the nest without disturbing them.

We got quite a clutch of eggs and I looked in every few days.

They all hatched and eventually fledged. 

This was when they mistook me for mom...

 

And this is them just before they left the nest, must have been pretty snug in there for six of them.

I was just incredibly lucky! It was so nice to have the family on our doorstep. 

Nesting time is upon us and we will look out for any new occupants. 

I put up bat boxes a couple of years ago but no sign they have been used as yet.

I had a few in a couple trees that are now removed (the trees so the boxes had to go too!)

 

Never had any bats, but for a few years they were inhabited by flying squirrels!  Very cool little creatures!  Nearly tame and unafraid of humans for some reason.  I guess because there's little meat on them!  BUT... you do NOT want them to gain access to your attic!  At one time there were at least a dozen of them living there.  For some reason, their population decreased and they disappeared.  Haven't seen one in many years now.

Wish we had more bats here. They're fun to watch flying around at dusk. Also really good at getting rid of mosquitoes and other pests.
