8 Speed 1/8th inch from closing all the way!

I have split open an 8 speed out of an old tractor I got recently. I split it open and checked the needles bearings and cleaned up the gears. I absolutely cannot get this trans put back together. Iv split other 8 speeds in the past and never had this hard of a time. Any advice would be super appreciated!

Not having taken one of these apart before, I can only wonder if perhaps a needle from one of the bearings has come adrift and is jammed between the end of a shaft and the bearing cap? I don’t know. This is something I have come across before with auto driveshaft universal joints. However, I’m sure someone on here will have the answer for you.

I have foumd that alternately rotating the input shaft and brake drum while tapping the case with a rubber mallet works to get it to come together.

Got the same problem 2days ago. the axles weren't cleaned up enhough.

 

 

Further tips, make sure everything is aligned nicely. inspect that everything is sitting in deep enough in the right-side casing before putting the left-side on.

I am just throwing this out there... It seems the diff bolts should be pointed in a certain direction in @stevasaurus’ videos...  maybe that is the hood up?

Do I recall a gear being put in backwards can cause this?

Absolutely!  they only go in whit the nut away from the gear, that side is a hair longer, and sometimes it just hits enough to be allow the tranny to be closed but will do damage to the bull gear.

Things to look for...

1.  Are the reduction and pinion gears even on the cluster gear and input shaft??

2.  Did you add any shims to the input shaft or under the 11/44 toothed gear??

3.  Is there any debris around or in the holes or studs that align the case halves??

4.  The nuts on the differential should be facing up, except for the 10 pinion LS differentials.  (which face down)

5.  Check to see if all of your inside bearings are flush with the inside of the case half.

6.  Sometimes, using the 4 corner bolts to evenly and delicately force the case halves to close.  (last resort)

7.  Is it 1/8" all the way around??

 

Reduction and pinion gears are even.

@stevasaurus I had my diff bolts the tap side down. I flipped the bolts and Boom! Went together slicker than pulling a greasy string out of a cats hind end. Thanks again guys!

This set screw broke off. Looks like a drill rethreading coming soon.

If you can grab that with something, it may turn right out...they are not usually that tight in there.  If that is a regular dog point set screw, it is hardened steel.  It doesn't drill easily.
