Lee1977 6,673 #1 Posted April 10, 2021 (edited) Got the steering wheel fixed last Friday and took it for a lap around the farm. Found out the bushing on the column was worn out,, I couldn't tell with steering wheel so loose. Tore in to it last night and just finished it. Flange bearings don't work on the 520 as there isn't a place to bolt them like on the 312. I do have a Wheel Horse parts supply, so I had to find something that would work. Didn't want to bother my machinist friends. as both helped me last week. I came up with a plan and use a 6203 R12 bearing that would not fit with out some modification, Took a while but I got it. Also cleaned up the dash wire brushed and painted the bolts along with the new steering wheel adapter. The first thing you have to cut a slot out of the front and back center of the bracket just to get the bearing to go all the way in. The slots were some where around 1/2 to 5/8" wide. Then cut a 1/2" wide strip off a 1 1/2" pipe, it is smaller inside then the 6303 bearing, I then cut a piece of it for both sides used an old bearing clamped to the bracket with one side of the pipe strip and welded it. Then clamped tight across both strips and the bearing and welded the other side. The new bearing has to be pressed in place. On the square bent side I drilled holes and filed out the center. On the angled side I used a cutting disk in the side grinder made three cuts and used a chisel before filing. The collar holding the gear down has to be adjusted before the bracket is bolted down The bearing moves the collar down into the plate where you can't get to the set screw. You could used a second collar as a spacer to move it down below the plate. That is about the best description I can give.
