XI Axle Pivot Repair Help

I have a damaged axle pivot. It seems like it could have been designed better. How should i go about fixing the wallowed out pivot hole in the frame?

I thought about welding or bushing, but i dont know how to redrill it out in the right spot? 

 

I have a new used pivot pin on the way, but the fact that the front rests on the threads makes me think its just a matter of time before it happens again.

Don't  have an XI, but I'd  think it should be riding on the shank and not the threads...

I would consider welding reinforcement plates with bushings on the frame, then use a slightly longer shoulder bolt for a pivot.

 

Just about all  of the wear in that hole went up.  You could use the bottom of the hole to locate the new repair components.

 

I do not own, and haver never worked on an XI, so this is just a suggestion.

That is how I would design it, but i think they did it this way because the back of the pin is a plate and the front is threaded, if the front hole were big enough to ride the shank then when the pin inevitably broke from the plate then it would pull through. 

 

I am considering welding a plate on the front that could do the shank, but then I would have to turn my own pin that is longer. 

 

Still hoping to see what ideas people have to offer.

The pin that is in there is a custom part with a perfectly perpendicular plate welded to one end and a thread cut in the other. 

 

I like the weld-a-plate idea. Making that spot thicker with a bushing would at least slow the wear on the threads. I need to make sure i will still have enough thread engagement.

Is it a standard diameter pin? What about making one from round bar and using a large cotter pin to keep it in?

Is there a way to lock the pin so it does not turn with the axle? The older models did this but the flat bar welded to the pin is not heavy enough and would break out. That would save the frame from wear.

So i ventured out of my comfort zone today and got this fixed up. 

 

@gwest_ca@gwest_ca i think it is  standard but it is large and it had a big 1/8" plate welded to it to stop rotation, but it also broke out of that.

 

First I welded the shallow spots on the pin, chucked them up in my lathe and turned it down. (yes this is not a pretty fix, its a functional fix)

Then i welded up the oblong hole (no progress pics of this) and reamed it out with a carbide burr. 

 

I drilled a good hole in another plate and welded it on to help spread the load out over more area. Looking back i should have welded up all the threads to this point on the pin. 

 

The paint job is terrible but it will be functional.

Welded the plate back on the pin and welded up a crack that formed.

All that is left is assembling it back.
