Another Horse!

WheelhorseBob

Well I brought home another wheel horse, a c161twin automatic. I really bought the tiller and got a solid 42” rear discharge deck and the tractor in the deal. I really don’t know what to do with it. It isn’t running but I think is been sitting in a barn for a very long time. Had a mouse infestation in the air cleaner. Came with the house a young couple bought. I don’t know much about black hoods but the fender pan and hood are fiberglass.

Congrats!  That twin should work just dandy for the tiller or deck!

Yessir well done.

I've been a fan of those Briggs twins for a long time.

Smooth running. Sound great. Good torque.

Good Engine.

Be a good one to bring to @JCM Jim's or up here for a visit.

My first horse many years ago was a Work  Horse 1642. It never once let me down, should never have sold it. That being said I’m heavy on projects and need a reason not to resell this one. I’ve got the C121 to finish and my favorite C161 auto with a Kohler 16 to also start and finish. I didn’t need another project but did need a rototiller for an upcoming yard project. What to do.

I'm not as much of a black hood guy as some but that Briggs 16....

Neat.

So I did a little reading last night seeing as how I really know nothing about Black Hood’s. Seems there are two very different versions. The early, 78-79 and the later 80-85. This is a early one and appears to be a C series with fiberglass fender and hood. In fact it is identical to my 79 c161 auto in almost every way. Seems the 1980 and newer a Black Hoods are of the later design 300/400/500 series. So in conclusion there are two very different black hoods. Also is the early fiberglass version a rare bird?

c-series don

I’m not sure how rare it is, I’m fortunate enough to have both versions of the black hoods. C-161 Twin Automatic and a C-165 automatic. I remember a story about them having a hard time getting Kohler engines(or something like that) and going to Briggs. The Briggs wouldn’t fit under the existing style C-series hood, so they came up with the fiberglass hood to accommodate the larger engine.

My 78 that was my dad‘s has the Briggs twin in it. It’s mowed and pushed snow in very hilly conditions for its entire life. He bought it when it was a year old from our neighbor who was aggravated that he broke the seat pan on it. Dad bought it from him and immediately put a steel pan on it and it’s been that way ever since.E0E87681-D461-46A0-B0B5-E9B13BDC81D6.thumb.jpeg.27eff09246fd39fb638356fb4d08b293.jpeg474AB790-8104-4626-BE72-942697AD5241.thumb.jpeg.db2e200253806a6239698b9fa3a5c907.jpeg

@WheelhorseBob

That's a good working rig there.

I don't exactly need another tractor but I'd be hard-pressed to refuse a C with that engine.

You'll be impressed with it when you put it through it's paces.
