AHS 1,440 #1 Posted April 5, 2021 Ok, so many questions! Do I have to remove the oil tube? I think I do. Is it just connected by the three screws on bottom? The starter; I have removed the two 9/16” head on bottom, the 7/16 head on back... is that all? I have a used Kohler starter, one that does have the bolt hole in the correct place.. I guess I will have to get another one. The key is a KOHLER starter... not a reman.
AHS 1,440 #2 Posted April 5, 2021 Also, do you have any ideas? I only want to do once! What is a durable starter?

As far as getting a durable replacement I'm much more prone to rebuilding an OE Kohler starter. So here's the question, what's wrong with that one?

It has an awful loud noise when the key is turned. And it needs a rebuild, a new starter gear and spring. I may just have that one rebuilt.

If it's still working electrically okay and just needs a mechanical rebuild you might be perfectly able to do it yourself.

oliver2-44 9,760 #7 Posted April 5, 2021 The electrical section of the Kohler overhaul manual has a good section on starter rebuild. it also shows how to make a simple sheet metal jib to hold the brushes with the spring in place to make installing them a lot easier.

AHS 1,440 #10 Posted April 5, 2021 Well, the brushes are burnt, one coming apart. And the magnets got one piece that is cracked. So time to buy another one. 1

AHS 1,440 #12 Posted April 7, 2021 I know some of you may have bouts with DB electrical, but that’s who I got my starter from. With a 1 year warranty and $61.00 from DB...and a Kohler starter for $275.00. Hopefully that is the last one I will have to put in there!! I doubt it! The starter bolted right up, and is a lot quieter than the last one!😀
