rustyedge1 169 #1 Posted April 3, 2021 A friend of mine brought this old tiller down for me to use this spring and it doesn't have a drop of gear oil in the box. All I have handy is 90 weight gear oil & some 80 weight hydraulic oil. I would like to top it off prior to use and was wondering what type I should use and if the 90 weight would do. Any help appreciated. Looks like it might leak a bit.

squonk 41,038 #3 Posted April 3, 2021 (edited) A lot of those old tanks used some kind of grease. I put 90w in an old Wizard tiller my Grandfather had and half of it leaked out thru the gaskets. Ariens and Oregon sells a 00 grease for their snowblower gear boxes. That's what I would use if it were my tiller. https://www.amazon.com/Oregon-4049H-00-Grease/dp/B0018U0A4C/ref=asc_df_B0018U0A4C/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=167146984279&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=12263711158379401854&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9005158&hvtargid=pla-340483408204&psc=1 Edited April 3, 2021 by squonk 2

Ariens snowblower and Snapper rider both use the "00" grease. Not expensive, easy to inject.
