OLD Rototiller Gearbox lube oil question ??

Recommended Posts

rustyedge1

A friend of mine brought this old tiller down for me to use this spring and it doesn't  have a drop of gear oil in the box.

All I have handy is 90 weight gear oil & some 80 weight hydraulic oil.

I would like to top it off prior to use and was wondering what type I should use and if the 90 weight would do.

Any help appreciated. Looks like it might leak a bit.

A lot of those old tanks used some kind of grease. I put 90w in an old Wizard tiller my Grandfather had and half of it leaked out thru the gaskets. Ariens and Oregon sells a 00 grease for their snowblower gear boxes. That's what I would use if it were my tiller.

I agree. Ariens snowblower and Snapper rider both use the "00" grease. Not expensive, easy to inject.
