Bruce 1960 56 #1 Posted April 3, 2021 Hey Guys, I thought I could tear this old RJ-58 down and rebuild it without asking you all alot of questions, then come back with before and after pics to surprise everyone. But I have run in to a snag.I found that after the rebuild of the transmission some 20 yrs ago, I must not have replaced the bronze bearings at the end of axle shafts, so I bought new ones but now I can't find the seals. So here I am asking what and where are you guys using for these seals. Parts book lists them as 1232 axle oil seal. Are they available other places or are these a toro only thing? Thanks in advance. 2
953 nut 55,229 #2 Posted April 3, 2021 (edited) SKF 9815 or Motion Industries 01295997 should do the trick. No more keeping secrets @stevasaurus has a great thread on rebuilding the old three piece transmissions. Edited April 3, 2021 by 953 nut 5

stevasaurus 22,740 #8 Posted April 3, 2021 Notice the side plate on the left, it has a reset ring on the end of the axle tube. This is an early RJ side plate. The #1232 (SKF-9815) seal would go in here. These did not last long, so Wheel Horse came up with a cap seal #1257 (TORO # 83-2840) that goes over the end of the axle tube. These are from TORO, but I understand Lowell has them. The side plate on the right is what they all look like now. @Bruce 1960 if you have that reset, you can use both seals, but it is not necessary. Forget the #1232 and get the "Cap" seal for your RJ. They are pricey...$18-$23 for a pair. Note: these side plates do not have the bronze bushing in there yet. Picture of "Cap" seal. 3
stevasaurus 22,740 #9 Posted April 3, 2021 What are the numbers & letter inside the black square in the picture.??? This is your casting date for that transmission. Next to the shifter. 1
Bruce 1960 56 #10 Posted April 3, 2021 (edited) Stevasurus, mine has has the cap seals that you show, thanks for the pics, now I know what to buy. And my numbers are from a replacement transmission, so its from a 1959, number is D14-9, I junked the original trans many years ago, now I wish I had it back. So here are the seals I first bought, so are these the inner type? My old cap type is laying beside them. Edited April 3, 2021 by Bruce 1960 1

I am and have been a member, I was going to post in other forum, but since I started my original post here I wanted to let the guys here know to go look at the finished project when it got done, but not done yet, just here asking a few questions, but if the mods want to move it feel free to do so. stevasaurus 22,740 #12 Posted April 3, 2021 I'll leave it here for now...no problem. D14-9 D=April 14th 1959 Even if you changed out the transmission, I think I would call your RJ a 1959 now. It's obviously not a 1958 anymore.
stevasaurus 22,740 #13 Posted April 3, 2021 Yes, those are the seals you do not need. #100863 is the newer number from Wheel Horse and super-seeds the #1232 and equates to SKF-9815. Those seals will work on any Wheel Horse 2 piece transmission with 1" axles. 2
Bruce 1960 56 #14 Posted April 5, 2021 @stevasurus- You are correct, they are pricey. $50.60 pricey!! I just sucked it up and ordered them. Oh well, the things we do for fun!!!! 1
Bruce 1960 56 #15 Posted April 25, 2021 The flat black on the hood sure makes it easier to see the dents I need to work out. It's getting closer to being alive again.
