I obviously have something wrong. As soon as I let go of the key, I lose the 12V going to the coil. I need to do some more checking.

If you have a 4 terminal regulator and you followed the WH wiring diagram you are missing a connection. Bottom terminal of regulator to A on the genny. (It was a Kohler part and isn't on WH diagram)

That looks correct.  Now if it doesn't charge Ground the Field terminal and see if it starts charging...

With the tractor running

2.6 V F terminal on generator

0 V A terminal on generator

2.6 V F terminal on VR

12 V Battery terminal on generator

12 V Lighter terminal on generator

The generator warning light is lit, but the cigarette lighter works!

I am going by the diagram in the book, but I don't know how to post it.

I'll do that

You mean just briefly, or leave it grounded?

Yes I have another wire from VR to A terminal.

Battery voltage stayed constant. 11.97 V, but the starter works good.

The little light went out, and the bulb is good.. I checked it.

The field wire is a variable ground  I have no idea what if any voltage you should see.

If you have it wired correctly and there is good ground ( I know you paint and powder coat a lot., looks nice but. terrible for grounding)  make sure your V/R mount and the generator body are well connected and grounded.  then it should start charging when you ground the F terminal.  If not the the charging field coil in the generator is likely bad.

Ya know, for the 6 times a year this tractor MIGHT get started, I'm not going to worry about it right now. I really wish it were working, but it's not.  I have it tore down, doing some paint touch up. When I get it all back together, I will bolt a SPECIFIC ground cable to it, and see if that helps any. :thanks: so much for all your help.  Greg

I did scrape off some paint from the generator mounting bracket, ran a #8 wire directly to neg on the battery, didn't help. :dunno:
