ebinmaine 67,409 #1 Posted March 31, 2021 @OldWorkHorse Steve and I are going to put together a yard cart / trailer for me that is going to replace my orange dumping trailer which he'll be taking as a project. This new trailer is going to be a 17 cubic foot standard issue decent quality metal trailer like Agri-Fab or Ohio Steel would sell. My original thought was to do a direct replacement of the orange one and put the winch on the trailer itself like I have now. Someone on here suggested that I should attach the winch to the Tractor and leave the trailer as a separate entity thereby keeping the winch available for lifting heavy stuff without having the encumbrance of the trailer. Perhaps @krystolo ?? Well what I'm looking for is suggestions about how to go about making the winch. I need it to be capable of lifting something in the area of 600 lb for dumping the trailer. My thoughts so far: Build or modify my trailer hitch so that it would attach to both axle tubes and the lower pin mount. Vertical riser stand height of approximately 4 or 5 ft. The lifting point that will attach to the front of the trailer needs to be about 24" past the nose of the trailer so that as it goes up the cable will align as the nose moves up and back. This will also permit me to pick things up as they are behind the tractor. Imagine an upside down capital letter L... I figured on making this 2 x 2 square stock, 1/8" thick. What else do we need to do? Thoughts comments suggestions. Thanks all. 1
SylvanLakeWH 25,525 #2 Posted March 31, 2021 (edited) Something like this? Or...mounted on tractor... Add winch and pulleys and go... Or Harbor Freight concept...on a hitch plate. Added benefit it would be like a mini crane on the back of your tractor... Edited March 31, 2021 by SylvanLakeWH

Stormin 9,981 #4 Posted April 1, 2021 I'd go for the one mounted on the tractor with a jack on the trailer draw bar, to stop the tractor rearing up.
Mickwhitt 4,607 #5 Posted April 1, 2021 Love the idea of a crane on the back of the tractor. May just get the old grey cells on that one. Just been to my steel supplier and spotted lots of material that would be just the job.

I was poking around online this morning looking for something else and I found trailer hitch extensions that have the mount already on them. Less than $30. That's a good start. Mickwhitt 4,607 #7 Posted April 1, 2021 I will have to start from making a trailer hitch lol. Mine just pins onto a cast hinge piece on the bottom of the gear casing. Im guessing a proper hitch fixes to the axle in the same way as the plow frame does.

Lee1977 6,656 #10 Posted April 1, 2021 Here is a couple of pictures of my receiver hitches. Here is one I started but found it too narrow for the 520. you need to make yours to match the snow plow mount. I first thought mount the winch low on top of the receiver hitch. That won't work as the center if the winch to the left side is 8 !/2" that would put it too close to the left tire. Build the boom to angle back off the the trailer hitch and mount the winch up higher on the boom. By a 12" long receiver hitch cut it and use the back part to mount the winch on the boom. Here is the wider hitch that fits on the 520, I used 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" x 1/4" angle to clear the transmission filter. On you 8 speed I would use 2" x 2" x 1/4" angle. Here is the 120/180 receiver hitch. 1 2

Lee1977 6,656 #12 Posted April 1, 2021 For some reason my computer won't let me edit anything with out I fight it. The hitch on the 312 is braced off the top of the transmission. 2

Mickwhitt 4,607 #15 Posted April 2, 2021 Ahhh. I see, the plow mount stays where it is with the towing hitch forming the top clamp bars for it? Makes sense. Is the cast pivot used at all for this type of hitch? Im thinking it can't hurt to use it as an extra attachment/bracing point. Mick

Mick In my particular case the bracket for the plow Mount and hitch goes four and a half instead of up and down but you've certainly got the picture. When you say cast pivot I assume you're talking about the lower rear pin? Yes I'll be using that as well as another attachment point.

ebinmaine 67,409 #18 Posted April 8, 2021 Here the base for the vertical stand. Here's the Incredibly excellent plan drawing Capacity will be limited to the 1200 lb winch rating, OR whatever lifts the tractor front end. Cinnamon C160 has oversized and fluid filled tires all around. I figure the actual lift capacity I'm current state will be 400 to 450. I do have weights I can add to the front for better safer lifting. 2
Lee1977 6,656 #19 Posted April 8, 2021 Straight up like that with the seat as far back as you have it your are going to bump your head on the winch boom. Take the boom up at an angle to the same spot have drawn. Weld the boom to the removable hitch and do the bracing down there. Yes you can't lift something quite as high but you don't need a heavy object swing around up 4 ft. Fix the Ferguson it's heavy enough to do that. The base you bought I sure you can use on Colossus. That receiver hitch you have on Ciannmon now won't handle the boom plus 450 #. Spend some more money and build or buy a good receiver hitch. Do it right the first time.

I bought some steel today to do just that. @OldWorkHorse Steve and I started work on the crane today. I stayed straight vertical. If I hit my head on that I'll learn fast enough not to do so. I'm going to build a bigger beefier hitch for Cinnamon Horse as part of this project. Steve snapped a couple pics of me during the festivities today. I got a metal chop saw. Very handy. He brought his bandsaw over. I'll be sure as shootin ordering one o them!! I'm nothing special as a welder yet anyway... Today's beads were pretty rough. They'll hold it together though. 🤠 3

A little organizing. A little planning. A lot of shooting the breeze. Got the main vertical and horizontal pieces together. Fabbed up and welded the inner triangle braces and the 2" tube brace. Left to do: Make a lower baseplate patterned off the upper one. That'll bolt through each other to sandwich the hitch. Weld on 3 strap rollers. Likely weld an end support for the main roller then bolt that on. Weld the winch in place. Need to try to find someone to paint it all up. Then from there build the hitch and modifications the trailer. Trailer is a 17 cube and measures 56" front to back. Axle will be set back 18 to 20 inches. Angle reinforcement to lower front and below the floor from front to rear. 48" of the 56" of the trailer floor will be getting a second layer of 16 guage sheet metal added. (Because that's what size metal I have). More fun to watch soon..... 1
