All true. 

 

And the above in bold reminds me I'll likely need to add weight to the front of the C160 to compensate for the extra heavy duty winch/crane at the back.

I tested this once using the chain that's through the top.  

Works excellent, though heavy.

I haven't used it as a lift or pull rig since late November/early December. 

 

Some notes:

As stated in the previous post of mine it is heavy. 

That's good for strengthness but is a bit challenging to handle of course.  

If I built another one I'd go thinner walls.  

 

I believe once I get the winch and cable/strap holders on it'll work great.  

 

One other possible thought is to add alternative pull options like welded on chain hooks. 

 

 

The hitch it's been in will need to be moved from the Cinnamon Horse 74 C160 to another tractor that has a standard height front end.  

Cinnamon's lifted front makes the crane tilt back too far. 

 

I'll be making up another hitch for that tractor too, accounting for the tilt.

I have an UPDATE!!

 

 

We have an 18 cu yd load of 1 1/2" crushed stone being delivered soon. 

 

I figure the Wally Digger Backhoe is a great tool for LOADING yard trailers. 

 

We need a way to UNLOAD them. 

 

So.....

Back to this crane project!!

 

I started out with chopping almost 16" off the end of the crane. Didn't need it. It also added a LOT to the leverage of the whole hitch in a serious downward twist. 

I'll compensate more for that with a vehicle scissor jack. 

 

 

I'd added a long tube frame to the trailer years ago. Forget now why. May have been because I was thinking about putting the crane on the trailer back then. May have been because I didn't want to chop the tube until I knew what I was doing with this build. 

 

Anyway,  I shortened that up by over two feet.

This got the crane and trailer nose about 28" closer together.  

 

 

 

 

Next thing was to finish adding the lift mechanism to the crane.

Last for today I found a piece of scrap/leftover 1/2" square edge Advantech. 

That's going to be bolted to the floor of the trailer. Partially for a great reduction in noise level when filling with stone. Partially for a huge difference in added strength. 

 

 

Next on the list is to add a piece of 3" angle iron to the front as my lifting point. 

That'll be bolted through the Advantech, the metal floor, the front cargo box support, and the lifting chain(s)..

Looking good. If you see a free plastic truck bed liner on the side of the road anywhere the center of it makes for a good slippery bed floor.

It also takes quite a whooping.

Definitely agreed but I don't know where I would put them yet and also not sure if this is going to be a permanent solution. I don't think it'll really go anywhere because the tractor will be locked in place and I never dump anything unless I'm on level ground.

Try to angle the foot so the base is slightly further rearward than the top. This helps to stabilise the setup. If you mount it truly vertical, as the load is taken up the foot can sink in the ground and end up not providing much support!

I've also considered adding to the base to increase its size. 

With the current crane being angled as it is I may have to take whatever I can get until a more appropriate hitch is built.

I got the angle iron on and front stand back on. 

Also mounted a chain through the front bolts. 

I'll experiment with the chain length. I left it long on purpose.

@ebinmaine  like the various  ideas as you go , also like the ball hitch , find that to be the easiest hook up , and very smooth in its  function .  pete
