bc.gold 3,403 #1 Posted March 27, 2021 The young fellow living in this shack, parents recently paid to have a new roof installed, in rural Manitoba we read out own meters, dial an 800 number then enter the meter reading digitally. Kid by-passed the meter stealing power but did not know that a meter reader came around every four months to reconcile the readings with those given by the customer. Reader noticed the by-pass, hydro came out and cut the mains, now to reconnect the kid has to take out a permit and the whole house would have to meet code specs. House has sat vacant for the past two years, and the oxycontin kid has moved back in with his parents.
Handy Don 13,129 #2 Posted March 27, 2021 (edited) Our provider switched to remote-read meters some years ago. One benefit to them was reduced labor costs for readers (they tried the do-it-yourself but found too much of what @bcgold described above). Interestingly other uses have been polling the meters more often to permit better usage analysis and looking for significant variances and also detecting and/or confirming, and even estimating the size of possible outages where several meters in an area stop responding.
