Insulator between metal gas tank and ignition switch?

I've seen a piece of plastic in a couple tractors. 

Mostly disintegrated. 

 

Is there a particular thing or substance you put between the two?

My C-120 didn't have a metal gas tank but it did have a clear plastic piece between the tank and dash. It fit up under back of the cast dash.

The 1977 C-Series used a plastic tank. Can see why they are still available from Toro at $124.08 at Parts Tree.

The $124.08 is the reason they are still available. They might have sold them all at a reasonable price of $4.08.

Are you talking about the piece of plastic that is looped over the terminals on the switch?? I have cut a new one out of a milk jug to replace a missing one.

Eric I know that all the start /gens that I had a loop around the switch to prevent spark and gas.

Fish Paper  Electrical insulating fiber paper. It will bend and mold to your needs. VERY tough stuff. Available at McMaster Carr

There are 2 holes drilled in it. You form a loop,line up the holes and the post of the switch goes through the holes. Then the switch post goes through the dash. Kind of a PITA to get it all in there.

so it wraps all the way around the switch and has approximately 5/8 diameter holes in it?

I used a Kwik Trip milk jug, If you wanna stick with that brand I'll have to send you one. KT's are mostly a Wisconsin thing. In this case it's more about the container than the contents. Need a nice  pliable container that is easy to work with and won't crack.

Skim milk. Unless you need the weight for plowing, then whole milk.

Yes Eric it is a wrap around type. Then is held down by the console with the big washer and nut.

I'm having problems with the McMaster website now.  When I posted it, there was a 3/64" option for an easy to form 3/64" clear plastic, my guess is that they are in the middle of an update.  I have purchased plastic from them that bent easily into a Z shape when heated and hardened when cooled.
