acc7484 52 #1 Posted March 14, 2021 Never believe what they tell you. This old Nag need everything! Lets make it a Stallion. I picked up this 520H (Hydro). The PO stated that the maintenance was up to date and many parts were replaced. So lets get into it. The 520 H is one of the Top of the line machines that Wheel Horse produced at the time. Equipped with a 20 HP Onan Industrial Engine. This Machine is 33 years old. It took several hours to clean this machine and scrape all the muck off of it. I believe this machine was loved at some time in it life but the PO just beat it down. Never believe what they tell you. This old Nag needs everything! Lets make it a Stallion. First: Lets address the running issue. This is a twin cylinder. It doesn't always want to start.
acc7484 52 #2 Posted March 14, 2021 Wheel Horse 520H I love the full Stewart Warner gage cluster. As you can see the Tach to the far right is reading past 4000 RPM. That's a problem. New part on order. This is the test switch it don't work and is no longer available. I took it apart cleaned and lubricated it and its good to go! I purchased new arm rests for the seat. Cleaned up the Dash Panel refurbished both switches test and Head light Switch. 5
acc7484 52 #3 Posted March 14, 2021 Wheel Horse 520H I pulled out the coil thoroughly cleaned and tested. The primary resistance is 3.5 Ohms. and the secondary reading is 17.70 M Ohms. Were good. The Ignition wires were another story. Does this tell you something? I have new Ignition wires ready to go. So ... While I'm waiting for parts: These engines run hot on the rear cylinder. I removed the access panel and punched 3 one inch holes in it to help with air circulation. This modification allows the hot air from the cylinder to easily escape. I added a fourth hole at the top after a test fit. I will go through the gage cluster and electrical contacts to insure everything works. I changed out all the fuses. I'm still chasing electrical gremlins. The tail lamps were not working. Just get a 40 watt iron and touch both sides of the socket with a little solder. Careful its plastic and rubber. Also I Re-swaged the rivets. Thats were you get your ground. Now ya know this is not right! The old Tach will never work again I just had to install the arm rests. A slight mod to make them work . Got a great price on line. I purchased this machine in good faith. The PO claimed the fluids were changed. Ya right! Never believe what they tell you. You know who you are! What a disgrace. You cant abuse a machine and expect it to give you good service. So far I got the oil changed, Air filter and Fuel Filter. New plugs and Ignition Wires. 2
