Signs of Spring

Interesting reading the posts from all you to the south of us. 

 

Our Maine wintah can obviously be pretty RUGGED. 

 

This year we were stuck on the north side of the various weather fronts most of the time. 

We got maybe 2 or 3 significant ❄️❄️ snows. 

Usually our ground base is around 3 feet by now. This year it's only less than half that. 

 

I'm hoping the trend continues for the rest of the month and April. 

 

It would be great to get a jump on firewood processing and keep the extra wood stacks growing.

Peepers...

 

My maternal grandparents spent a ton of time barefoot as kids. 

Their rule was they could be shoeless after the spring peepers were heard "nine nights in a row".

I was listening a piece on the wireless last week and it turns out one horse actually develops about 15 horse power. 

Wha? Who? But?  I know I know, its silly but that's the SI system for you.

Would I be correcting my thinking that a small horse would generate a lot less horsepower than something like a Belgian?

No kidding!  Very few below 0F days here this year.  Quite a bit of teens for sure but no freezing rain, no 2 foot snow storms.  Seen FAR worse here!  6 years or so ago it never got over 0F in February!

I think these are genuine 1/15th HP models. 

Originally bred to pull small children in tiny carts these horses are now used in the film industry to make diminutive actors appear normal size. Tom cruise has a herd of them on his ranch in Pasadena where he rides them and feels huge.

Luxury!  We used to have to walk barefoot to t school, in t snow, on t brocken glass. 

Thats nowt, we used to have to walk on t hot coils after school but before supper.

Trees are starting to bud, we have our first snow drops and daffodils in bloom and the morning are lighter. 

Our third, or is it our fourth lockdown is ending and already there are healthy crops of schoolkids springing up on the roadsides. Our top govt advisor is predicting another surge in infections by summer just in time to cancel the Chelsea flower show. 

Spring is in the air but unfortunately its not on its own lol.

These pictures were just taken. Quite a difference from Monday. Crazy but welcomed season changes. 60 degrees today and tomorrow 40 mph winds and avg 30 degrees .      Still to early to get hopes up for no more snow, where not out of the woods yet, stay tuned.

Those ancient maps of big snow storms don't scare me Tom.     I took the blade off the 312H and put on the tiller today.

 

I do have a couple others that have blades....just in case.

 

The daffy Dills  finally sprouted.

I saw a large flock on Canada geese headed North this morning.   

 

 

Our area Canadian honkers (the bird not the people) over-winter here .

I did see a Robin a few days ago .

Robins are a year round bird for us, but we do get visitors.

Daffy dies are in full bloom, crocus are popping up and trees are in bud. There is even some blossom on a tree opposite us, must be co fused as its freezing lol.

The pheobes showed up here in Maine today. Given that they're predominantly an insect eater that's a sure sign of warmer weather.

Does seeing two garter snakes while walking the dog today count?

 

Saw a Blanding's turtle yesterday.  Didn't know what it was when I saw it, had to look it up.  Turns out that species is on the endangered list in Canada and is rarely seen here in Michigan.
