littleredrider 409 #1 Posted March 8, 2021 I picked up a parts JD 318 yesterday for $200. Wanted only the power steering setup, but for $100 more I got the whole thing. Was gonna pay $100 just for the p/s. It caught fire, so no motor, plastics, dash, etc. But the steering valve n lines look fine. It has front/rear hydraulics, rear PTO, not sure on front but don’t think so. I guess these are pretty strong tranny’s, but would it be worth while to swap it into a horse? A 520 to be specific, with a 10 horse diesel. I know the motor would have to be turned. I’m just think quietly at work. I plan on taking the p/s for the d250 when I get it.

littleredrider 409 #3 Posted March 8, 2021 I’m not sure, but googled 318 transaxle n pics were the same. If I remember I’ll take some pics when get home...
JCM 9,381 #5 Posted March 8, 2021 I came real close to owning a 1989 318 brand new. A little to much $ for me back then, $ 4895.00 with a 38'' mower. I settled for a WH 1989 312-8 for $ 3400.00 and it's been a great machine. Still have a hankering for either a 318 or 420 JD of that vintage, maybe someday. Trying to find some info on that tranny in some old literature and all I come up with so far is on the 318 it has the 1 3/16'' axle shafts and on the 420 it has a differential lock and 2 range rear axle. DennisThornton 4,769 #6 Posted March 8, 2021 I got all excited to own a JD 318 a few years back. The more I hunted around and finding nothing the more I got interested in a 400 series but they are even harder to find around here! Now I'm happy to just look. Don't need it, don't have time to fix what I have already.
littleredrider 409 #7 Posted March 8, 2021 I was hoping for a diff lock lol. Not a huge deal, least has cutting brakes. The axles in the pic are the ones I want to use if I make it 4wd. Need to get the tractor here to see if it's even feasible.
stevasaurus 22,863 #8 Posted March 9, 2021 I can't seem to find any information either. I'm guessing the pump is an Eaton and the transaxle is a Wheel Horse...no idea what part number for the complete for either.
littleredrider 409 #9 Posted March 9, 2021 I guess they are pretty strong tho, so that's a good thing. Depending on how things turn out with the 250, maybe put it in that.....
