WHX?? 49,157 #1 Posted March 8, 2021 So in my quest to put a transmission together for a 701 project I have a 5007 which I know is correct for a 701. I also have what I suspect is a 5049 from a 1055 parts tractor. I do not know if the 5049 is orginal from said parts 1055 since it was such a franken horse. Both transmission halve casings have identical parts numbers cast into them. Question here can I take the best parts from either tranny to make one? I have not yet had the 'nads to start cleaning up gears, shifters and diffs. Gotta psych my self out for that chore as neither of the internals are very pretty. I also suspect that no matter what and by the amount of rust laying in the bottom of both trannys this restored tranny is gonna be another noisy one. Too much metal lost off gears and such by the time I get things whipped into shape. No big deal just a show putter and light duty tub puller will be the end result. Thoughts Steve @stevasaurus??? BTW one unit I filled with ATF, the 5049, before split does look a bit better. Pics as I get into them more and get the nerve to start cleaning up internals. Casings going to blaster tommorow.
Racinbob 11,207 #2 Posted March 8, 2021 Jim, all the gears are identical in those two transmissions. If you can salvage quality gears to make one good unit then you wouldn't even have to worry about babying it. If you pull up the specific parts list for each one of those transmission I suspect the only part that is different is the shifter and that only the way it shaped externally. Of course flushing them out before splitting is a great idea. 2

In other words are the two case halves machined as a pair? One wouldn't think so? This mystery was over the mushroom gear capped bearing. To reveal this on the inside.....not sure if I can save this half or not Edited March 8, 2021 by WHX24

WHX?? 49,157 #5 Posted March 8, 2021 Yep.... not a pretty sight.... Fortunately ther is enough original bearing surface left to seat a new bearing and perhaps JB weld the wallow in?
oliver2-44 9,853 #6 Posted March 8, 2021 You should be able to mix and match case halves.
stevasaurus 22,863 #7 Posted March 8, 2021 You should be able switch around case halves and any of the gears, shafts and bearings. Are the axles the same length? Just curious. The cap bearing issue is not factory, I'd loose that case half...other halves are out there. Infact, just about 2 months ago, we had a guy here that was going to junk his if somebody did not want it. He may still have it. The only other difference I know of, is the newer shift rails may be in the 5049. The ones with the flat side. Please check for me, also may be a difference...I thin the fill and drain plugs on the 1007 are different sizes...they are the same on the 5049. I'm not talking the plug on the side of the trans, I'm talking the fill plug on top of the trans and the drain plug on the bottom. 2
Racinbob 11,207 #8 Posted March 8, 2021 I'm with the others here. Mix and match till your hearts content. It looks like the only year for the 5049 is 1965. That's close enough to when the service bulletin came out on the shift rails you may have either. I gotta believe they may still have had some older rails on hand. You may have just the deeper neutral detent and not the flat. That would be ok though. I'm thinking you could figure out how to grind a flat. 1
